A research on the effect of technological innovations on spatial requirements in architectural education

The developing technology changes our life while causing many sectors to re-question themselves, and to comply with the time requirements. As well as making use of technological innovations, spatial/social adaptation becomes also necessary. With the development of Computer Aided Design (CAD)/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), architectural education and the architecture curriculum are also updated. Within the scope of the thesis, changing spatial requirements in the technology oriented architectural education with the developing technology were researched. Literature research was used as the method in the theoretical part of the study. The development of architectural education and educational spaces was briefly summarized since the 1980's. After that, design approaches, spatial requirements and standards in seven architecture schools in which the use of technology form an important part of learning experience were analyzed. In this process, the author tried to obtain the needed information via e-mail from the academic staff who work in these schools and their design offices. In addition, the use of technological innovations in the architectural education of sixteen universities in seven cities of Turkey were researched In order to determine and identify the current situation and the spatial expectations, in-depth interviews were held with twenty-seven academic staff working in the architectural departments of these universities. As a result of the study, the main spatial requirements and design approches in architectural education were detected in terms of technological innovations and recommendations were suggested about how the architectural education spaces should be transformed/designed in relation to the technological innovations in Turkey. It was seen that architectural education spaces should be flexible, wide and high-rise to realize CAD/CAM facilities together. These kind of spaces can facilitate information sharing, individual and collaborative work and develop students' design and presentation techniques while enabling students to become better researchers and designers in their future career life.
