The effect of simulation-based training for a patient under contact isolation on the self-confidence and satisfaction of students

Abstract (EN)
The aim of this semi-experimental study was to investigate the effect of nursing student training on the care of a patient under contact isolation by using a standardized patient on the self-confidence and satisfaction of the students. The sample of the study consisted of 30 students taking the "Surgical Diseases Nursing" course during the spring semester of the 2016-2017 academic year at the Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University Faculty of Health Sciences Nursing Department. A pretest was applied to evaluate the knowledge of the students on the care of patients under contact isolation. The first performance values of the students while working with a low-reality simulator were evaluated according to the student evaluation manual. The students were then provided theoretical training both verbally and by using demonstration methods on the approach to the patient under contact isolation. Each student practiced with a standardized patient based on the appropriate scenario for care of the patient under contact isolation. This application on the standardized patient was recorded on video. An analysis session was then conducted in groups of 5 students. All students underwent a satisfaction and selfconfidence evaluation with the Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Learning Scale and then took a final test. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to evaluate the data. The difference between two dependent variables was investigated with the paired ttest. A p level of 0.05 was used as the significance level when interpreting the results. The knowledge scores of the students revealed significantly higher final test scores following the standard patient application compared to the pretest scores (p<0.05). The post-training performance scores were also significantly higher than the pre-training performance scores (p<0.05). A significant relationship was found between the self-confidence and satisfaction scores of the students (p<0.05, r = 0.538). The confidence score also increased as the knowledge score increased. Taking our results into account, we recommend the use of practicing on a standardized patient in nursing training programs.
