Abstract (EN)

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is one of the neurodegenerative diseases characterized by motor neurons death. Even though causes of the ALS are not entrely known, some evidence displayed that oxidative stres might involve during the progression of ALS and induces the death of motor neurons. In this study, we investigated antioxidant enzyme activities catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutatione peroxidase (GPX) as well as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels in the blood of ALS patients. We found that CAT and SOD enzyme activities decreased in ALS patients compared to control while GPX activity and TBARS level increased. According to study results, decreased CAT and SOD enzyme activities and increased GPX activity have reflected that the balance between oxidant and antioxidant defence systems disrupted in ALS patients. Then, ALS patients' antioxidant defence system was inadequate to buffer increased free radical levels. As a result, increased TBARS levels displayed that oxidative damage in tissues was started. Our results confirm that oxidative stres plays a role during the progression of ALS. The result also showed that spesific peripheral biomarkers are needed to develop monitoring of ALS.
