Assessment of frailty and self-efficacy in the elderly with TYPE 2 diabetes mellitus

This study is a descriptive study and was carried out to evaluate vulnerability and self-efficacy in the elderly with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The population of the study consisted of 268 type 2 DM aged 65 and over who applied to the family health center in Bolu. The sample of the study consisted of 138 type 2 DM elderly people who applied to the family health center. The data of the research were collected using the survey method, using the Edmonton fragility scale and self-efficacy scale in diabetes management for patients with Type 2 diabetes. SPSS 24 package program was used to evaluate the data. 23.9% of elderly people with diabetes are apparently vulnerable, 16.7% of them are mild frailty and 8.7% were severe frailty. Edmonton fragility scale mean score was found to be 5.80 ± 3.31. The self-efficacy scale has a mean score of 60.01 ± 17.22, and 52.2% of the elderly with diabetes scored above the self-efficacy scale. A statistically significant relationship was found between the self-efficacy scale subscales and the vulnerability scale in individuals with diabetes. It is recommended that health professionals evaluate elderly people with diabetes, especially in the risky group, with their frailty and self-efficacy dimensions and include these two cases in the care process.
