Abstract (EN)

Cinema is in the mutual interaction with culture. The concept of gender is regarded as responsibilities and expectations imposed by culture on men and women, therefore it could be assumed that gender roles and stereotypes shape cinema and are shaped by cinema as well.In this research, firstly the concept of gender, gender roles and stereotypes are defined and then psychoanalytic theory in relation with gender theories is examined. In addition, social institutions such as family, religion, education which are assumed to have some effects on shaping gender roles are discussed.Reha Erdem is one of the most innovative and most important directors of Turkish Cinema, especially in the last ten years. In this study, how gender roles and stereotypes are portrayed and represented through the characters in his films are examinedand two of his films are analyzed from psychoanalytic point of view. This study assumes that Reha Erdem critizes patriarchal family structure through the adolescent characters in his films. Briefly, the aim of his dissertation is to analyze how patriarchal gender roles and stereotypes as well as social institutions which are effective in shaping them are criticized by Reha Erdem?s film language.Key Words :Gender, stereotype, psychoanalytic, culture, Reha Erdem , adolescent.
