Anxiety - depression frequency and effective factors in medical faculty students

Abstract (EN)

Introduction and Aim: Depression and anxiety while being a major problem for students engaged in continuous courses and examinations, it poses much greater risk for medical students. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of depression and anxiety in Dicle University Medical Faculty students and to investigate the factors that may cause these problems. Material and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed with the participation of 108 female 207 male medical faculty students with a mean age of 21,97 ± 2,990. In the medical students of Dicle University Faculty of Medicine, the Beck depression scale (BDI), Beck anxiety scale (BAI) and sociodemographic data form were filled in 30/11/2018-30/12/2018 and anxiety and depression risks were investigated. Data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) package program. Results: It is seen that 3,8% of the participants live alone, 25,7% of them live in dormitories and 28,9% of their families' monthly income is between 0-2000 TL and 21,0% is above 5000 TL. BDI and BAI averages were 12,91 ± 9,636 and 12,65 ± 10,432, respectively. When BDI and BAI scale was evaluated according to marital status, mother education and father's education status, amount of scholarship, monthly income of the family, monthly expenditure and presence of psychiatric diseases in the family, no significant difference was found. (p>0,05). However, it was determined that smoking, alcohol use, being satisfied in medicine, feeling successful, being loved by the social environment and attempting suicide were significant with BDI and BAI (p<0,05). Conclusion: As a result; It was observed that the factors such as having a diagnosis of psychiatric disease, smoking, alcohol use, being loved by the social environment, preferring the faculty of medicine were predominant psychosocial factors for the students and the negativity to be experienced increased depression and anxiety scores. In order for students to have a healthy occupation and spiritual life, it is necessary to take necessary precautions and to ensure a healthy working environment.
