Abstract (EN)

This study explores the place of traditional Turkish handicrafts within the cultural value system shaped by regional conditions, and their interaction with contemporary graphic design art. In particular, the art of weaving is considered a form of expression through which individuals reflect their emotions, thoughts, and life experiences produced through long-term labour and mastery. Carpet weaving, in addition to being an art form that preserves and transmits cultural memory, serves as a visual medium of aesthetic expression. Today, with the influence of computers on art, handicrafts strive to maintain their relevance and impact by asserting their presence in digital platforms. In this context, graphic design emerges as a powerful tool that bridges art and industry, combining different disciplines and technologies to create a universal visual language. Thanks to the possibilities offered by graphic arts, artists reinterpret traditional elements with a contemporary perspective and produce original works. Within this study, animal figures found in Turkish carpet art were examined, and bird figures were stylized and redesigned in accordance with the principles of graphic design. Based on the information obtained from the bird figures among the animal depictions, original designs featuring bird figures have been transformed into graphic design applications. As a result of the study, 15 works were produced in sizes of 50x50 cm, 60×60 cm, and 40×120 cm. The designs were created by uniquely combining basic materials such as MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard), felt, and fishing line. MDF was used as the base to form a stable and flat surface. Felt applied on the surface provided both a weaving effect and a three-dimensional appearance. The empty spaces left in the compositions were secured with fishing line, emphasizing the bird's free and independent nature. As a result of these studies, decorative panels were created as works of graphic design art. The bird figures featured in these panels also present examples that could be used in industrial design through printing and painting techniques. With this study, it is aimed to transmit examples of traditional Turkish handicrafts to future generations through the use of contemporary design arts and to increase interest and attention toward this art form.
