Values education in Turkish folk narratives

Societies take their place on the world stage with their own values. They prevent the disappearance of their cultural codes by transferring their values from generation to generation. Values enable the individuals to be accepted and socialized in the society, guide the individuals about necessities to be done, create and protect the social life, and have a great importance in the upbringing of future generations. For this reason, value education has been on the agenda frequently in recent years. Folk narratives contain rich cultural elements. They are highly influential on the education of people of all ages. For this reason, necessary studies should be carried out in order for folk narratives to have a wide place in individual and social life. The aim of the study is to determine the values related to individual, social, countrynation and religion in the epics, tales, folk tales, legends and anecdotes from Anatolian folk narratives, and to examine the usability of these narratives in value education. The study uses the document analysis technique, which is a qualitative research method. As a result of the study, values such as forgiving, courage, self-sacrifice, goodwill, selfconfidence, adherence, loyalty, justice, solidarity, hospitality, respect, love, cooperation, patriotism, and belief in God were frequently encountered in folk narratives. Consequently; It has been concluded that among the folk narratives that are now written down and saved from disappearing, those that contain positive examples can be used in values education, excluding those that contain negative examples.
