Abstract (EN)

Idioms are mirrors of the culture and lifestyles of nations. The loss of idioms from a language is accepted as a warning sign about the erosion in the culture of a society. Teaching of idioms helps individuals understand and protect their culture from being altered by different influences. Unfortunately, today?s education system in many countries - including Turkey - overlooks at the fact they are an integral part of the language. This study aims to draw attention to the importance of idioms in the Turkish language and suggests their inclusion to the scope of grammar books for local students and foreigners. The study also deals with the definition of different levels of knowledge and teaching methods of the Turkish language for foreigners. The definition of the concept itself and the purpose of teaching of ?idioms? are analyzed. The whole matter is summarized under the topic related to the purpose and suggested methods of teaching idioms. The ?Turkish Dictionary of Idioms? has been used as reference. The idioms used in the books by Turkish author Cahit Uçuk were scrutinized and commented. Anecdotes were added to explain all of them.It is suggested that teaching the historical origins of the idioms is very important and providing the pupils with example sentences is mandatory. Writing Turkish texts which include idioms and their explanation may be perfect means for a lasting tuition of the Turkish language.
