Abstract (EN)

The term "coup" refers to the sudden and forcible overthrow of a government. Coups are actions typically carried out by military forces or certain groups, leading to radical changes in political systems. Coups in Turkey have profoundly shaken the political, social, and economic structures throughout the history of the Republic. This has constituted serious interference in the country's democratization process. The coups and coup attempt that took place on May 27, 1960, September 12, 1980, February 28, 1997, and July 15, 2016, significantly impacted not only the political structure but also education policies. Coups resulted in changes of government, the disruption of the constitutional order, and the prosecution of political leaders. They also brought about problems such as economic uncertainty, capital flight, and high inflation. Furthermore, violations of human rights, arrests, and oppression left deep marks on society. These traces influenced branches of literature, which draw on social events. These traces were evident in the writings, works, and lectures written during the coup periods. After the coup, the person or persons who took power sought to guide the public, raise awareness, or present their own justifications. As a result of these pursuits, the coup's legacy was reflected in education policies. The Ministry of National Education seemingly incorporated the reasons for the coups, their consequences, and the social views of the coup perpetrators into curricula. Such changes to the curriculum, the texts included in textbooks, and the selection of specific literary works clearly demonstrated the impact of the coup process on education. This study examines the impact of coups in Turkey on educational programs. Changes in educational policies before and after the coups, revisions to the curriculum, and differences in content in textbooks are examined. It also evaluates how the relationship between coups and literature is reflected in textbooks and curricula. The long-term effects of political interventions on the education system are revealed. In this context, the study examines the effects of coups on educational programs in Turkey. Educational policies, curriculum changes, and textbooks before and after the coups are compared. It also examines the relationship between coups and literature and how this relationship is reflected in textbooks.
