Abstract (EN)

The material and moral losses caused by work accidents in Turkey are quite significant compared to European countries. There are many reasons for the occurrence of work accidents. One of these is the rapid advancement of technology, the increasing development of mechanization and the resulting work accidents. To the extent that these and similar causes are improved, occupational accidents are expected to decrease. Compiling statistical data published by the Social Security Institution (SSI) and the European Statistical Office (EUROSTAT), Ki-Square test was applied in comparison of the number of occupational accidents of the European Union (28 member states) and Turkey between 2008 and 2016 according to gender, age groups, fatal and injured occupational accident status and number of employees. In addition, Logistics Regression Analysis was used to determine the rate of occupational accidents of Turkey compared to Europe for the size of the business according to the gender, fatal, injured work accident, number of insured employees at work and age groups of insured employees. There was a statistically significant difference between all groups (p<0.001). The highest fatal and injured accidents in Europe occurred in 2008, with the most fatal injuries for Turkey in 2011 and the most injured in 2016. Compared to Europe in Turkey, males employees have 2172 times more work accidents than famales employees. It is observed that the number of insured workers in the workplace has decreased as the number of work accidents decreased. The highest rate of occupational accidents in Europe is 35-44 years old, while the rates of occupational accident in Turkey are between25 and 34 years old. In Turkey, 1352 times more work accidents than those of employees under the age of 18 are experienced in 18-24 years of age compared to Europe. The results of work accidents in 81 provinces of Turkey, the number of work accidents in the five provinces with the highest number of; Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Bursa and Kocaeli. When work accidents are proportional to the hours, the most common work accidents in 2008 were between 08:00-08:59 and in 2011 between 10:00 and 10:59 and from 2012 between 11:00 and 11:59. Between 2008 and 2016, 28 European countries compared their in-version of work accident rates. The most work accidents occurred in Germany while the least work accident occured in Latvia. This study, work accidents in Turkey and EU (28 member states) countries were compared and focuses on occupational accidents and precautions to be taken in Turkey.
