Somatization and mentalization examination in women who migrated from Turkey to Europe

The primary aim of this study; (1) is to examine the relationship between somatization and mentalization in women who immigrated from Turkey to Europe; (2) to evaluate somatization dimensions with some sociodemographic variables. In this study group of research, there are 291 migrant women between the ages of 19-80 who have migrated to Europe. The study is a correlational survey model based on quantitive data. Demographic Information Form, Somatization Emotion Conflict Scale (SECS), and Mentalization Scale were used to collect data in the study. As a result of the statistical analyzes, it was found that there is a negative and significant relationship between the sub-dimensions of mentalization, Self-Related Mentalization and Somatization Frequency, SUD. No significatn relationship was found between Others-Based Mentalization and Motivation for Mentalization, which are the other sub-dimensions of mentalization, and Somatization Frequency, Somatization Severity, and SUD. It has been found that somatization is higher in cases such as chronic health problems, being unmarried, young age, low socioeconomic status, and forced migration. It was found that education level did not make a significant difference on somatization. The findings of the study were discussed in the light of the relevant literature.
