EVALUATION OF CURRENT SITUATION OF MARITIMETRANSPORTATION IN TURKEY AND POSITION IN OTHERTRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS(M.Sc. Thesis)Okay KILIÇGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYSeptember 2006ABSTRACTCompared to other transportation systems, the maritime transport is thetransportation system which is cheaper and growing as parallel to technologicalimprovements. About 96% of the world trade is carried by maritimetransportation. Maritime traffic is dominantly focused on freight and passengertraffic from the point of the transportation objectives. However, it comprises alot of components to reach the objectives. The major factors which definemaritime transportation are maritime safety and security, port facilities andshipbuilding sector. In the study concerning maritime transportation in Turkey;Institutional structure, International Maritime Organization (IMO), merchantfleet, maritime trade, maritime safety and security, Turkish Straits, portfacilities, shipbuilding sector and maritime education and furthermore;technological, political and economic developments in the international shippingsector and conformity of Turkish shipping sector to this developments areexamined in detail and general evaluation is conducted and requiredmeasurements are proposed to ensure the development of Turkish maritimetransportation.Science Code: 911.Key Words : Maritime transportation, trade, fleet, safety and securityPage Number: 228Adviser : Ass.
