Financial literacy in social studies curriculum in Turkey and Sweden

21st century skills refer to the general abilities required for individuals to succeed in the modern world. Financial literacy includes competence in these skills, especially in participation in economic life, financial planning, retirement, risk management and financial decision-making. Today, financial decisions are becoming complex, and individuals need financial literacy skills to make more informed decisions about whether to manage their income, invest, borrow, or save. Therefore, in the context of 21st century skills, financial literacy is critical to enabling individuals to make better financial decisions in their daily lives and build a healthier future economically. The study aims to compare social studies curricula and textbooks in Turkey and Sweden in terms of financial literacy skills. In the study, which was carried out using the qualitative research method, a literature review was made and the data were obtained by document analysis. The collected information and data were evaluated by content analysis. Key concepts including financial literacy skills in social studies, curricula and textbooks of the two countries are examined in detail and presented in a comparative way. MEB Social Studies Program (2018) and 4th, 5th and 6th grades as data sources. There are classroom social studies textbooks, Swedish National Agency (Skolverket) Social Studies Program, 4–6 Utkik Samhällskunskap 4-6, Puls 4th, 5th and 6th grade textbooks from Nature & Kultur Publishing House. The findings show that both countries attach importance to financial literacy skills. It is seen that Turkey includes financial literacy skills in social studies textbooks by focusing on microeconomic data at a basic level. Sweden's textbooks, on the other hand, explain both micro and macroeconomic concepts from a broad perspective that includes economic literacy as well as financial literacy education.
