Examination of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of women football players in Turkey and Portugal sample

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this research is to measure and compare the levels of female footballer's intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, amotivation and their sub dimensions in Mediterranean region of Turkey and in region Porto of Portugal. Female football players participating in this research are selected by random sampling method. The sample of the study includes professional, semi-professional and amateur female football players from Mediterranean region of Turkey and from Porto region in Portugal. In addition, the personal in formation form created by the researcher was used in Turkish, Portuguese and English languages. Inaddition, English scale: "Sport Motivation Scale" – SMS, which is orginally developed by Pelletier, Fortier, Vallerand, Tuson, Briere, and Blais (1995). Turkish scale: "Sporda Güdülenme Ölçeği" – SGÖ, which was validated by Kazak (2004) for Turkish athletes. Portuguese scale: "Escala de Motivação Desportiva" -EME-BR, adapted for Portuguese athletes, Bara Filho et al. (2011), was used in three different languages. The researcher observed in female footballers who participated in the study that the levels of intrinsic motivation as incentive to accomplishment and extrinsic motivation as identification, not differ statistically significantly from how many years they have played football (p & gt; 0.05). In the sub-dimension of intrinsic motivation -to experience stimulation- is seen that the motivation levels among those who play football professionally are significantly higher than among those whoplay football as amateurs (p & lt; 0.05). In the sub-dimension of external motivation, the motivation levels of those who play footballas semi-professionals are significantly higher than those who play football professionally (p & lt; 0.05). The levels of intrinsic motivation to know and accomplish, external motivation for identification and non-motivation levels differ statistically (p <0.05) It was found that the levels of intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation of women football players who does recreation activities other than football training is significantly higher than football players who does not recreation activities other than football training (p & lt;0.05).
