To predict the speaking skills of university preparatory class students in terms of attitude towards English, anxiety and general self-efficacy

This study was conducted with the aim of determining the relation between attitude towards English, anxiety, general self efficacy and English speaking skill of university preparatory class students and the regression degree of these variables on English speaking skill. The sample of the study consisted of 518 students studying at Ege University School of Foreign Languages Preparatory Class. As instruments, "Attitudes Towards English Questionnaire", "English Class Anxiety Questionnaire" and "Scale of General Self Efficacy" were used. To determine the students' English speaking level, their English speaking scores in 2014-2015 first term were taken into account. Pearson product moment correlation coefficient was used to analyse the relationship between dependent and independent variables. Also, stepwise multiple regression was utilized to determine the prediction level of the independent variables. According to the findings, there is a weak and significant relationship between attitude towards English, anxiety and English speaking skill. However, there is not a significant relationship between general self efficacy and English speaking skill. Besides, it was conducted that English speaking skill was significantly predicted in order of priorities, by the variables attittude towards English and anxiety.
