The effects of achievement motivationon the academic achievement of university English preparation class students

The aim of this research is to discern the effects of achievement motivation on theacademic achievement of university preparation class students.Specifically, it endeavored to answer the following questions: 1. What is thelevel of achievement motivation and academic achievement of university preparationclass students? 2. Is there a significant difference between the students? achievementmotivation and academic achievement according to a) their gender, b) their beingundergraduate or post-graduate students, c) their being day class or evening classstudents, d) their being the students of English-medium or Turkish-mediumdepartments, e) their studying in a preparation class before university? 3. Is there arelationship between the students? achievement motivation and academicachievement according to the variables mentioned above?545 participants from 36 classes which were randomly chosen from D. E. U.,The School of Foreign Languages formed the sample of the study. Data werecollected by achievement motivation scale. In addition, in order to measure theparticipants? academic achievement the means of first semester grades were alsoused as measures of academic achievement. It was identified that the achievementmotivation and academic achievement of post-graduate students are higher than theundergraduate students / day class students are higher than the evening class students/ the students of Turkish-medium departments are higher than the students ofEnglish- medium departments and positive correlation was found between theacademic achievement and the achievement motivation. On the other hand, thestudents who have studied in a prep class before university have a lower achievementmotivation, but higher academic achievement. A positive correlation was foundbetween the academic achievement and achievement motivation.
