Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this research is to determine whether there is a relationship between youth leadership characteristics and social emotional competencies of students attending university, and if so, in which direction and to what extent this relationship affects students' social emotional competency levels. "Youth Leadership Traits" and "Social Emotional Competence" scales were used as data collection tools in the research conducted using the relational scanning model. The population of the research consists of a total of 6656 university students studying in 7 faculties at the undergraduate level at Siirt University in the 2019-2020 academic year. No sampling method was used in the study. There are a total of 713 undergraduate students attending the university in the study population. In the research, the data were analyzed using the SPSS 21 package program. Descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, one-way analysis of variance, correlation and regression analysis techniques were used in the research. As a result of the research, it was determined that according to the perceptions of university students, they generally have youth leadership characteristics "often" and social-emotional competencies at "high" level. As a result of the correlation analysis, it was determined that there was a positive and highly significant relationship between the youth leadership characteristics and social emotional competencies of the students attending the university. In addition, it was determined that there was a positive and high-level significant relationship between the youth leadership characteristics of the students and the compatibility and the expressiveness sub-dimensions of their social emotional competence levels. As a result of the regression analysis, it was determined that the youth leadership characteristics of university students in general significantly predicted the social emotional competence levels of the students. In general, it was concluded that the youth leadership characteristics of university students explained 61% of the variance of social emotional competence levels of the students. It was found that the variable of decision-making skills, which is one of the sub-dimensions of youth leadership, did not have a significant predictive effect on the expressiveness and adaptability sub-dimensions of social emotional competence, and that the willingness to struggle and goal setting, communication, group skills, trust and reliability, problem-solving skills, and responsibility variables had a significant effect on the expressiveness and adaptability sub-dimensions was found to have a significant predictive effect.
