Examination of the relationship between anti-productivity business behaviors and patient safety culture perception: The case of Mersin

This study aimed to examine the relationship between nurses' counterproductive work behaviors and patient safety culture perception. The population of the research consists of 898 nurses actually working in three private hospitals and one university hospital in Mersin province. 380 nurses participated in the research. In the study, the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture patient safety culture hospital survey, developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in 2004, was used to evaluate nurses' perception of patient safety culture, and Bennett and Robinson's (2000) study included "employees deliberately breaking important organizational rules and entering the organization." "Interpersonal and Organizational Deviance Scale" was used to measure deviant workplace behaviors, which are defined as "behaviors that harm the members of the organization". There are also questions to determine the work and personal characteristics of nurses. Statistically, t test, one-way analysis of variance and correlation analyzes were performed. According to correlation analyses, no significant relationship was found between counterproductive work behaviors and patient safety culture perception. At the same time, no significant relationship was found between patient safety culture perception and behaviors that harm the individual and behaviors that harm the organization, which are the sub-dimensions of counterproductive work behaviors. Counterproductive work behaviors consist of many different dimensions. The fact that counterproductive work behaviors are multidimensional causes their determinants to diversify. At this point, it is thought that behaviors are not only caused by personal characteristics but also situational determinants are effective. It can be argued that in health services, where the subject is human, anti-productive behavior has serious consequences for the patient, the employee and the institution, so employees avoid such behavior.
