Abstract (EN)
Aim: It has been revealed that as obesity becomes increasingly widespread, the rates of obesity prejudice in society also increase. Prejudice causes discrimination in the media, business life, education, healthcare, bilateral relations and social areas, and affects the quality of life of obese individuals. This study was planned to determine the prejudices of the nurses working in the province of UĢak against obese individuals and to raise awareness, since healthcare professionals are in one-to-one contact with obese individuals. Materials and Methods: Our study was conducted in the form of a face-to-face survey with 112 nurses working throughout the province of UĢak between 03.15.2023 and 09.15.2023. The survey consists of 2 parts, including sociodemographic characteristics and GAMS-27 Scale. IBM SPSS.23 program and T test, ANOVA test, Chi-square test, Spearmans' rho correlation test were used to analyze the data. Linear Regression model was established. Results: In our study, the rate of nurses' prejudice against obese individuals was found to be 50%, the rate of those prone to prejudice was 35.7%, and the rate of those without prejudice was 14.3%. There was no significant difference in the appearance analysis between participants' BMI values and obesity prejudice (p>0.05). According to the regression model in which the obesity bias scale score was accepted as the dependent variable, monthly income status negatively affected the scale total score 6.6 times (p=0.039). Conclusions: Obesity bias is a problem that closely concerns countries in terms of its consequences. In our study, it was determined that nurses working in UĢak had an obesity prejudice. Obesity bias in health workers causes various problems in the utilization of health services by obese individuals. Governments should develop policies and it should be aimed to reduce obesity prejudice.
