Abstract (EN)

The sanctions initiated against Iran in 1980 started to affect the civil aviation sector significantly over time. Sanctions were put in place to prevent the purchase of aircraft with more than 10% American technology. The sanctions made the trading of such aircraft subject to the permission of the US Treasury Department. Intermediary companies that do not comply with this rule also risk being subject to US sanctions. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between embargoes in Iran and civil aviation accidents. In the study, Iran was compared with 3 regional countries (Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Egypt) and a country from the far east (Thailand) with a similar number of flights using the data of the last seven years of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The results show that accident rates in Iran are higher than the four compared countries, and this difference is statistically significant. Other countries were also compared with each other, and as a result of this comparison, it was determined that the difference was not statistically significant, only the difference between Iran was substantial. This situation concerns not only just, Iran and Iranian citizens, but also the whole world. The fact that such a study is the first in terms of the data obtained is thought to be important for the field.
