An investigation of valve design parameters change and it is effects on vehicle shock absorber performance

Shock asorbers are widely used today. They are used as vibration dampers in many applications from automotive to aviation, from health to furniture industy. The shock absorbers used in automobiles are both safety and comfort elements. In addition, depending on the type of suspension system shock absorbers are used in different structures. Suspension systems are classifed as passive, semi-active and active systems. In this study, passive type suspension system is considered. Strut type and telescopic type shock absorbers are used on the front and rear axles of passenger vehicles. The rear axle shock absorbers are generally telescopic and twin-tube type and have valve group components working in both directions. The damping force is generated by the oil passage between the valve components during the operation of the shock absorber. The design parameters of the sub-components of the valve groups are having an important role in determination of the damping force. In this thesis, suspension systems and their components and shock absorbers are explained. Passenger vehicle rear axle telescopic type twin-tube shock absorber structural and performance characteristics are explained together with the valve types. Within the scope of the study, the parameters affecting the damping performance were determined by the measurement method of the damping force and the changes in the damping force were presented with characteristic graphs.
