Plan and facade typology in rural house architecture in Van-Baskale

Rural houses, by being a part of their natural environment, take their final forms as a result of long term experiences. In addition to be built without any aesthetic concern, they may attract attention with some practical functional solutions as the requirement of life conditions of the countryside. Başkale Rural Houses, which are nested with nature, are examples of countryside construction of ecological and sustainable architecture. In the villages and arable fields, which shape according to Başkale geography's mountainous and hard characteristics, the rural local houses are seen alive in majority. The constructional techniques and materials originate depending on the territory's physical features. In this connection, Başkale Rural Houses, which were built by cob, stone and wood with the usage of local constructional techniques, give importance of being unveiled and archived before they disappear with the effect of regional conditions that they are exposed. The purpose of this thesis is to get a typological study of architecture's plan organization and façade arrangement of Başkale Rural Houses by setting examples. Within the scope of the study, the reliefs of 30 Rural Houses of 7 villages and arable fields in Başkale territory have been taken and their data's such as settlements characteristics, their street-housing relation, their plan and construction elements material and techniques have been reviewed importantly. As this study is in the importance of the first work, it aims to be a source and inducement for the application of new studies. Thereby, it can be possible for Başkale Rural Houses to be inside of rural architecture memory.
