XVII. pattern features and conservation recommendations of Western Anatolian (Transylvania) carpets of the 19 th century

Western Anatolian carpets are traditional Turkish carpets produced in Western Anatolia. These carpets, which are usually hand-woven, are known for their rich patterns and vibrant colors. Geometric motifs, plant and animal figures are mostly used in the patterns. They are produced extensively in the Aegean Region, especially in cities such as Izmir, Uşak and Bergama. There is a historical connection between Transylvania and Western Anatolian carpets. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Western Anatolian carpets, especially Uşak carpets, were exported to Transylvania as a result of trade routes and cultural interactions between the Ottoman Empire and Transylvania. These carpets were used for decorative purposes in churches and large estates in Transylvania and over time became part of the cultural heritage of the region. The Anatolian carpets on display in churches in Transylvania provide important examples of the rich weaving tradition of Western Anatolia. In Transylvania, these carpets are also known as "Transylvanian carpets". This connection reflects the interaction of both the Ottoman and European weaving arts and their trade relations throughout history. This thesis aims to develop conservation strategies for the conservation and preservation of seventeenth-century Western Anatolian carpets for future generations. The study emphasizes the importance of environmental regulation, cleaning and care methods, storage and display techniques, professional repair processes, and detailed documentation. These approaches aim to contribute to the conservation and preservation of the rich weaving heritage of Western Anatolia.
