Abstract (EN)

Bioactive glasses are biomaterials which are used in the treatment of bone fractures or cracks as bone filling material. Because of their high bioactivity, hydroxyapatite-like layer formation occurs on their surface. So they can connect tightly the soft and hard tissue in the body. 45S5 bioactive glass produced by Hench and the most important component of these glasses are silica. Silica is produced by processes which require high costs, but alternatively it can be produced by evaluation of agricultural wastes. Rice husk is the best alternative for biosilicate due to their high silica content. Rice husk has 20% silicate in it and after burning process this rate increases 87-97%. Silica can be produced easily with alkali extraction method from rice husk ash. Based on its production parameters, biosilicate which obtained from rice husk ash has 5-10% impurities in it. The role of various ions in bone metabolism have been investigated in recent years. In this thesis work, commercial silica and biosilicate were used as silicate source in produced bioactive glasses. In addition to beneficial impurities in biosilicate, molybdenum and strontium was added in each bioactive glasses separately with these ratio 0.5%, 1%, 2% and 4%. Strontium doped bioactive glasses have been studied before in the literature, but the molybdenum was used as an additive in the bioactive glasses at the first time, part of this thesis work. It is expected from the impurities in biosilicate and Sr, Mo additives to contribute positively to the mechanical properties, bioactivity and biodegradable mechanism of bioactive glasses. The mechanical properties of bioactive glass was analyzed by Vickers hardness tester, structural characteristics was determined by FTIR analysis, morphology by SEM analysis, in vitro bioactivity by incubation in the simulated body fluid and biodegradation behavior was determined by incubation in the TRIS solution. The results showed that, bioactive glasses with biosilicate is better than bioactive glasses with commercial silicate according to their mechanical behaviours, bioactivity and biodegradability studies.
