Integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning in library automation systems: Automatic cataloging

Libraries have historically been essential institutions for the storage and dissemination of knowledge. However, in the rapidly digitizing modern world, libraries must go beyond their traditional functions to offer digital resources and services. In this context, advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) play a critical role in modernizing library services. This study evaluates how AI and ML applications can be utilized in library cataloging processes, the advantages these technologies offer, potential challenges, and their contributions to the efficiency of libraries. While AI is defined as computer systems that mimic human intelligence and model human behaviors, ML is a subfield of AI that enables these systems to gain self-learning abilities through data analysis. These technologies are ushering in a new era in the information processing processes of libraries. The study initially focuses on the technological advancements of libraries, discussing the contributions of contemporary technologies to library services. The research particularly concentrates on automatic cataloging processes and supports the potential contributions of AI in these processes with various examples. Fundamentally, Python programming language was used to automate the cataloging of materials through AI by recording them in MARC21 format. Additionally, using Python, ML was employed to extract keywords from given materials to generate subject and name indexes. The application of these technologies aims to enable many processes to be carried out in libraries without human intervention, thereby accelerating work processes. The adoption of these technologies in libraries will not only reduce the workload of librarians but also increase user satisfaction. However, for the full adoption of these technologies, it is crucial for libraries to establish the necessary technical infrastructure and train personnel to adapt to these new systems. Thus, while innovative approaches are being developed for the future services of libraries, key stages to consider will be highlighted.
