Abstract (EN)

Currency signs are various typographical signs and characters that directly represent the related country's currency and identify the exchange value of the currency within free market economy in the world. Central Bank of The Republic of Turkey (CBRT) announced a competition under the rubric of "Turkish Lira Symbol Contest" on September 8, 2011 and received 8362 applications. On March 1, 2012 the selected symbol for Turkish Lira was introduced in a meeting held at Central Bank Headquarters Conference Hall, which was open to the public. Although the country is trying to get used to Turkish Lira symbol rapidly, there has been and still are problems with the use of this new sign. This was due to the fact that the currency sign was designed as a logo and it has a strictly determined form and shape. However, currency signs should be designed as a typeface and should have its own place among characters similar to its kind. The main purpose of this work was to suggest solutions to the specified problem and to contribute to the accurate usage of Turkish Lira sign's dissemination. With this purpose, Turkish Lira sign was adapted to 10 fonts that were chosen from five different classical font categories. There haven't been found any academic work done on the topic within the reviewed literature. For this reason, it can be said that this work has an importance for being the first academic work done in Turkey on this topic.
