Abstract (EN)
This study was conducted to examine the effects of Buzzy® and ShotBlocker® applications on newborns' pain and comfort levels during heel-stick blood collection. The research was carried out between April and September 2025 in the Neonatal Unit of Samandağ State Hospital using a randomized controlled experimental design. A total of 174 full-term newborns aged 0–28 days were randomly assigned to the Buzzy® (n=58), ShotBlocker® (n=58), and control (n=58) groups. Prior to the procedure, vibratory cold stimulation with an ice pack was applied in the Buzzy® group, the ShotBlocker® device was used in the ShotBlocker® group, and routine care was provided in the control group. Data were collected using the "Infant Information and Follow-up Form," the "Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS)," the "Neonatal Comfort Behavior Scale," and audio recordings. Measurements were recorded before and after the procedure. Before and during the procedure, newborns' crying duration was assessed through audio recordings. The data were analyzed using appropriate statistical methods. The results showed no statistically significant differences among the groups in terms of mode of delivery, gestational age, sex, birth weight, or birth length (p>0.05). It was found that newborns in the Buzzy® and ShotBlocker® groups had lower post-procedure pulse rates (p<0.05), pain scores (p<0.05), and comfort levels (p<0.05) compared to the control group. No statistically significant differences were found between the groups regarding SpO₂ values or crying duration. In conclusion, the use of Buzzy® and ShotBlocker® during heel-stick blood collection was shown to positively influence newborns' pain and comfort levels, and the implementation of these methods is recommended.
