ABSTRACT Master's Thesis EFFECT OF GREEN PISTACHIO (PISTACIA VERA L.) SHELL EXTRACT ON BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS IN RATS Hidayet KAŞKIN Harran University Health Sciences Institute Department of Medical Biochemistry Advisor : Doç. Dr. İsmail KOYUNCU Year: 2024, Page: 75 Pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) is among the fifty food products with the highest antioxidant potential. In some recent studies; It was determined that three antioxidant substances with high antioxidant effects, such as gallic acid, catechin and epicatechin, were present in peanuts at the same time for the first time, and these substances were especially abundant in the shell part. Additionally, in another study; The outer shell of the peanut shell contains ten times more phenolic compounds than the inner part. It has been determined that it contains higher antioxidant potential.Despite all these studies, since the biochemical effects and molecular mechanism of green peanut shells on the organism are not yet known, they become waste during industrial production. The aim of this study is to reveal the potential contribution to the regional economy by determining the potential for use of discarded national wealth as phytotherapy and food supplement products. In this study, after green peanut shells were pulverized, extracts were prepared. After determining the lethal dose of the prepared plant extracts on Wistar albino rats, they were given to the rats in two different doses (100 and 200 mg/kg). To compare the nutritional supplement potential, commercially available pharmaton was given to a group (100 mg/kg) and compared.Water consumption, feed consumption and weight gain of the rats were recorded. As a result of the study, routine biochemical analyses, hemogram analysis, total antioxidant (TAS), total oxidant (TOS), oxidative and stress (OSI) levels were examined from the blood samples taken from the rats. In the results of working; It was determined that even high doses (1500mg/kg) of peanut shell extract did not show lethal results. While there was an improvement in lipid levels and liver function levels in the groups given peanut shells compared to the control group, no significant changes were observed in other biochemical and hemogram parameters. An increase in TAS level and a decrease in TOS level were detected compared to the control group. Compared to the Pharmaton group, no significant difference was detected in biochemical, hemogram analyzes and oxidative stress levels. As a result of the study, it was determined that green pistachio shell extract has food supplement properties. KEYWORDS: Pistachios, Peanut Shell, Antioxidant, Food Support
