Prof. Dr. Umur Korkut SEVİMIn this research, influence of the use of Ground Granulated Blast FurnaceSlag (GGBS), which is provided from OYSA İskenderun Cement Plant, on mortarand concrete properties was investigated. Measured properties of slag mortar andconcrete prepared using different amount of slag and water/binder ratio werecompared with the control mortars and concretes made with Normal PortlandCement (NPC) only. Nevertheless the strength and durability properties of alkaliactivated slag (AAS) mortars were investigated by using sodium silicate solution, sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate as activator. Three levels of Na+concentration in mixtures, 4%, 6%, and 8%, were studied. The test results showedthat the slag replacement made in concretes having low water/binder ratio increasedthe compressive strength compared to control mixtures and also that 40% and 60%replacement of slag with cement result an increment in compressive and tensilestrength, resistance to abrasion and, it reduced porosity and capillary waterabsorption coefficient compared to control mortar made with NPC only. Sodiumsilicate solution was the most effective activator in AAS mortars. The resultsobtained also showed that drying shrinkage in AAS mixtures was very highcompared with NPC and at the same time slag mortar and concrete cured in dryenvironment was influenced more than that of NPC concrete. Keywords: Blast Furnace Slags, Mortar, Concrete, Compressive Strength, AlkaliActivated SlagII
