The contributions of original print techniques to graphic designtraining at highereducation level

This study aims to demonstrate the contributions and outcome of the design and application process of original printing techniques to the education of graphic design. In Graphics Education at higher schools, it is important to demonstrate the responsibilities undertaken by original printing subjects and to determine their place in the whole education precisely. In line with the technical equipment and means of the schools, the education of printing techniques that are taught at schools during the Graphics Education must not be limited to the technical education and application thereof; but graphics education must absolutely be interrelated with other workshop subjects. It is demonstrated that not supporting the field education with original printing techniques appropriately has important consequences to the enhancement of the special logic of thinking directed at the design skills and field to be acquired.Original printing techniques have a great role in the simple thinking discipline that is to be acquired by the graphics student. The black-white contrast and mass blot effect of the printing is very strong. In order to deem a graphic expression successful, it is important to catch unapplied, untried distinct expressions, as well as a simple expression. The student learning the printing technique has the ability to give different directions to the technique as a result of the experience in the workshop environment. This, in turn, will enrich the experience of the student during the creative process. Each printing technique will enhance different skills in the graphics student.The emergence and history of the art of original printing in the world and in Turkey, and the departments where original printing techniques are taught in detail are constituting the theoretical infrastructure of this study. In this study, Woodcuts, Linocuts, Intaglio Printing, Lithography and Screen Printing techniques are subsumed under four headings of relief, intaglio, flat and mixed printing; and the explanation of the techniques, the means and materials used in the application of the techniques, the phases of the printing process are examined under different sub-headings. As the material required for the application of Lithography technique in workshop atmosphere where the student works constituting the basis of this study are practiced, the subject has been studied not studied in detail and a definition has been made only.This study demonstrates the importance of carrying out Graphics Workshop subjects and printing subjects in a coordinated way. The application groups of this study are the students in higher education receiving graphics education; and the applications of this study are the printings made during the graphics workshop and the original printing subjects during three academic years.In the Results and Findings section, the study is ended with two main headings, one for the contribution of the printing technique that has been implemented to the graphical expression, and the second for the contribution of the design of the topic chosen for the printing technique to graphical expression.
