IV MASTER OF THESIS THE EFFECTS OF SIMULTANEOUS PROMPTING PROCEDURE ON TEACHING RECEPTIVELY IDENTIFYING THE CAREER NAMES TO CHILDREN WITH MENTAL RETARDATION Osman Senai DOGAN Special Education Major Anadolu University, Institute of Educational Sciences, July 2001-07-19 Advisor: Assoc. Prof. Elif TEKİN This study was designed to examine the effectiveness of simultaneous prompting on teaching receptively identifying the career names to three children with mental retardation. Moreover, generalization and maintenance effects of simultaneous prompting were investigated in the study. The experimental design of the study was multiple probe design with probe conditions across three subjects. Five career names were taugth to each subject. Black-white picture cards explaning each career name were used during probe, training, and maintenance sessions of the study. The generalization effects of simultaneous prompting procedure were tested via generalization across materials with pretest-postest design. Colored picture cards were used during generalization sessions. Generalization sessions were conducted immediately after the first and fourth full probe sessions. Maintenance sessions were conducted 1, 2 and 4 weeks after the instruction had stopped. There were 15 trials in full probe and maintenance sessions, and 10 trials in daily probe, training and generalization sessions. Correct responses during all sessions were reinforced. Incorrect responses were resulted in error correction during trainig sessions and ignorance during probe, maintenance and generalization sessions. The findings of this study showed that simultaneous prompting was an effective instructional procedure on teaching receptively identifying career names to children with mental retardation. It also was evident that simultaneous promting procedure was effective on generalization across materials and maintenance. However, there is a very limited number of research studies analyzing the effectiveness of simultaneous prompting procedure and further research is needed.
