A method for predicting axial forces of columns (VBEs) in steel plate shear walls
Steel Plate Shear Walls (SPSW) are lateral load resisting systems composed of a thin web plate that is surrounded by boundary elements. For more than three decades, they have been used as the principal lateral load resisting system of various buildings in Japan, Canada and United States. However, the design methodology of the SPSW buildings from 70's has shifted. Much thicker web plates used to be preferred and stiffened to prevent buckling. Early research of 1980's by Kulak, Thorburn, Driver, Grondin and others has led the way to a new design methodology that took advantage of post buckling capacity of the web plates. Their work paved the way for numerous research programs that aided in better understanding of the system, especially its relation to earthquake-resistant design. In this new design methodology, boundary members are designed allowing not just tension field action to develop but also yielding of the tension diagonals. SPSW systems can dissipate significant energy through yielding tension diagonals. Their high initial stiffness and ductile response make them suitable in resisting seismic loads. Steel plate shear walls have less structural wall thickness, less contribution to building weight, faster erection and higher ductility compared to concrete shear walls. They can be used in new buildings as well as for retrofitting of existing buildings. Capacity design principles dictate that boundary elements of SPSW systems must be designed with the ability to resist demands from yielding tension diagonals. Internal forces of each member can be calculated using horizontal and vertical components of the tension strips. Vertical components of tension strips result in considerably high axial load demands in VBEs. Unnecessarily large steel sections for VBEs may be calculated with capacity design for SPSWs that are unlikely to yield over their entire height, typically multi-story tall SPSWs. A method is proposed in this thesis to avoid possible overdesign and to obtain realistic design forces for VBEs using square roots of the sum of the squares, SRSS method. For the study, SPSWs are designed for 3 case study buildings with the exact same floor plan but with different building heights; 6 story building, 10 story building and 14 story building. One bay with SPSW is designed for each building, using capacity design principles and proposed method. This method and preliminary design assumptions are then tested with actual earthquake events of the past, by non-linear time history analyses (NLTHA) of case study frames. Each frame is modeled, analyzed, forces and displacements for every member are recorded. Data obtained from NLTHA is compiled and compared with elastic design forces and applicability of the proposed method, SRSS Method, is verified.
Seismic performance of tunnel in liquefiable soil
Seismic performance evaluation of structures below the ground surface such as tunnels, manholes, pipelines, subway stations, deep foundation and lifeline systems is an important issue in growing modern urban areas. Therefore, needs for developing reliable tools and methods to decrease damage risk is a priority especially in high seismic risk regions. Evaluation of risk for designing an underground structure can be accomplished by gaining insight into the ground response during strong ground motion. During past two decades, uplift of underground structures buried in liquefiable site has been come to attention between scholars. In this thesis, the emphasize was to evaluate the uplift of tunnel due to geotechnical aspects rather than structural. In second chapter, some background information available in literature related to underground structures in liquefiable soils were given. Effect of different parameters such as buried depth, wide to buried depth ratio of tunnel, direction of ground motion propagation, permeability, friction angle and dilation angle of soil on tunnel behavior in liquefiable sand were explored. It should be noted that, current understanding on the influences of these parameters on the seismic behavior of tunnels is restricted due to lack of experiments or real case data. Present numerical methods are based on assumptions. Therefore, for the rationality and validation of numerical analyses can be established by carrying out experimental studies and numerical simulations cautiously. In fifth chapter, the procedure of finite element modeling for implementation in Opensees platform related to tunnel buried in saturated sand explained in detail. The most important issues that may occur during modeling such as chosen time step and adequate element mesh size clarified. Different available and practical boundary conditions procedure in geotechnical computation are described. However, in this research only absorbent boundary condition used and the effect of different boundary conditions on soil-tunnel system behavior was neglected. The numerical outline for free-field analyses consists more attention to the boundary condition to reduce the reflection of energy from far-field lateral sides of the domain and to represent structural and hydraulic interactions at the soil-tunnel interface. In the analyses procedure gravity analyses performed following by dynamic analysis to evaluate tunnel uplift behavior. The model analyzed with different ground motion amplitudes to investigate the effect of peak ground acceleration on tunnel uplift behavior. Additional evaluation performed for post-liquefaction behavior of tunnel in cohesionless saturated loose sand. Chapter 6 describes characteristics of the site response model used to perform the parametric analyses as described in Chapter 5. Single element level calibrations procedure was enlightened which were conducted for both cyclic and monotonic under drained and undrained conditions. The soil constitutive parameters calibrated against a commonly used semi empirical liquefaction triggering routine. As procedure of this constitutive model calibration, a new way was used for assuring that shear modulus reduction curve is compatible with soil shear stiffness. An extensive soil constitutive model calibration was carried out for PressureDependentMultiYield model (PDMY02) in Opensees. The aim was to capture more accurate response of the soil to be implemented in nonlinear 2D site response analyses for real liquefiable profile case studies. Calibration was only conducted for loose to dense sand with different blow counts of SPT test reported by researchers. Numerical evaluation was conducted with Single element simulation for monotonic and cyclic simple shear test. Different initial confining vertical pressures was considered to simulate soil behavior at different depths. The simulation results was compared with EPRI1993 recommended modulus reduction for sand. The result of calibrated parameters were in agreement with EPRI1993 recommended modulus reduction. Furthermore, the calibrated constitutive model parameters were used to validate the 2D site response of Wildlife Array site and Kobe port island site as real case studies. For Wildlife Array site, downhole array record of Superstition Hills earthquake was used as an input motion at the base of the model. For Kobe Port Island station site, the downhole array record at depth 32m of 1995 Kobe earthquake was used as an input motion. The acceleration, velocity and displacement time histories at ground surface level from simulations were in good agreement with recorded data at each site. In the second part of chapter 6, the calibrated model parameters are then verified against real case solutions for the linear behavior, and validated against down-hole array recording for Superstition Hills earthquake at the Wildlife Liquefaction Array (WLA) site and Hyogoken-Nanbu, Kobe earthquake at Kobe Port Island site. a series of parametric 2D site response analyses were performed to validate the soil parameters and to study geotechnical parameter that are typically unavailable in the empirical data. The resulting surface acceleration spectra are compared in a way that is comparable to the empirical method. The differences might be attributable to the inability of the 1D site response analyses to capture 2D and 3D effect such as surface wave and basin effect, or possibly shortcomings the in the 1D model's ability to faithfully represent all salient aspects of 1D wave propagation under liquefaction. Effect of different soil constitutive model parameters on uplift and settlement of soil structure system, effect of geometric of tunnel and soil domain on uplift and settlement of tunnel-soil system such as buried depth of tunnel and effect of height to wide ratio of tunnel and effect of ground motion characteristic's parameters such as frequency contents of motion, amplitude of ground motion and duration are the main parameters effecting behavior of tunnel. On the other hand, investigation the effect of geometry and ground motion characteristics, only frequency content and acceleration amplitude, on tunnel-soil system in liquefiable soil have been widely evaluated in literature due to simpler procedure for implementation. In this research, emphasize was on evaluating effect of combined horizontal and vertical excitation, post-liquefaction phase on uplift and settlement of tunnel-soil system and effect of different relative density on tunnel uplift. In terms of evaluating the effect of horizontal and vertical excitation combination, for vertical to horizontal maximum amplitude ratio higher than unity (V/H>1) an increase in uplift displacement of tunnel was observed. On the other hand, combination of horizontal and vertical excitation with V/H less than 1 will reduces the uplift displacement as it damps out the effect of horizontal excitation. Sand with higher relative density did not liquefied due to generation of less pore water pressure. Therefore, dissipation begins earlier compare to sand with smaller relative density. The rate of uplift and settlement displacement of tunnel increases as relative density decreases. For evaluation of post-liquefaction consolidation settlement of tunnel numerical simulations using solid-fluid fully coupled effective stress were conducted in OpenSees open source code platform. horizontal components of 1995 Kobe earthquake records was selected and first 40s of records only considered in analyses without any change in frequency contents of motion. The soil assumed as medium dense Nevada sand with relative density Dr=57% overlaying dense sand with relative density Dr=74%. Extracted results for Far-field, near-field and center nodes of domain. To evaluate the tunnel behavior with the liquefiable soil, critical points within the soil domain are considered horizontally and vertically. Both uplift of tunnel near-field and settlement in far-field in sand with higher relative density are smaller as relative density increases.
Seismic energy response of a 42-story reinforced concrete tall building
Energy based design approach is an alternative way to design earthquake resistant buildings by implementing strength and displacement characteristics of the building together, along with the effect of ground motion duration. Although there have been reasonable number of studies, there are still many unknowns on this concept; therefore, energy balance concept can not be used for design and evaluation of earthquake resistant buildings in current practices and design codes yet. In this study, a 42-story reinforced concrete dual system building was used to investigate energy components, particularly the dissipated inelastic energy as well as its damage potential and distribution among structural members along building height. Beside these relation between event distance, earthquake significant duration, and hysteretic energy to input energy ratio is investigated. The building was designed by a renowned U.S. engineering company, Englekirk Partners, Inc., for a Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) project as a reinforced concrete dual system building, i.e., moment-resisting frame building with central core walls. Analyses were conducted in Perform 3D-V6 for three hazard levels, namely, serviceability level earthquakes (SLE), design basis earthquakes (DBE), and maximum considered earthquakes (MCE). Each hazard level included 15 pairs of ground motion data. Perform 3D is capable of checking the energy balance at each time step during the analysis by calculating the energy imparted to the building due to external (earthquake) loads and energy dissipated by the internal (e.g. damping, hysteretic) components. Total energy absorbed by the building equals to the sum of the internal energy components and assumed to be the input energy. Conclusions that were drawn from the analysis of a 42-story reinforced concrete dual system building showed that amount of hysteretic energy increase as the input energy increase, hysteretic energy demand is maximum at beams (columns, shear walls and coupling beams follow it respectively) and lower stories. Hidden shifts on storywise distribution of hysteretic energy occur in case of stiffness differences between the building floors. Direct relation between the the ratio of hysteretic energy to the input energy, significant duration, and event distance were not observed. This thesis summarizes a preliminary investigation of nonlinear energy response of tall reinforced concrete buildings based on energy balance concept. Energy-based seismic design gives important clues to the designer regarding the location of potential damage along the building members and the stories. The amount and distribution of the dissipated energy can be useful to understand the overall behavior of a building, as it provides a measure for the cyclic behavior in terms of both maximum (ultimate) deformation and cumulative deformation due to several cycles. Use of dissipated inelastic energy (versus maximum deformation only) would give more accurate results in terms of damage, therefore, may be considered to estimate demand-to-capacity ratios in seismic performance assessment of buildings.
1-d numerical analyses of dynamic soil response under surface excitations
One of the main objectives of solving problems in geotechnical engineering is to evaluate the natural soil response under various external loads due to the fact that all civil engineering structures are located on or inside a soil medium. Under steady state or transient conditions, mechanical changes in a saturated soil system as a result of the changes in drainage conditions or the internal structure, are studied by using the "theory of coupled flow and deformation" which essentially considers the deformation of solid skeleton and flow of pore fluid simultaneously. The mathematical formulation behind this theory satisfies the coupled dynamic behavior of porous soils employing the poro-elasticity equations. Although, the actual theory proposes what is called a "fully dynamic (FD) formulation" including all the inertial forces associated with the motion of both solid and fluid parts (i.e. if there is more than one fluid filling in the pores of the porous medium), it is typically preferred to make some simplifiying assumptions in the theory to develop a more practical solution albeit not giving up from the accuracy. Taking the porous soil as a two-phase medium with only a single pore fluid (i.e. as water in the case of soils), these simplified equations are obtained as; i) Partially dynamic (PD) where the inertial terms associated with the pore fluid are neglected, and ii) Quasi-static (QS) where the inertial terms of both solid and the fluid phases are neglected. The dynamic response of the system is then analyzed by the appropriate form of these equations considering the physical structure and loading situation given in the problem. While employing the complex poroelasticity equations helps better understand the problem of evaluating the actual response of soils in geotechnical engineering, it is of more practical value to initiate related studies by taking the soil medium as a single-phase solid material neglecting the porous-structure in the beginning. In this way, pore water pressure is included externally in the system as an 'ad-hoc' way and flow is not taken into account. That said, as it is the easiest way to model the soil behavior, it could be, therefore, pretty much the first approach to obtaining the solution of the dynamic problem, particularly in a one-dimensional (1- D) situation. Along with such a 'simplified' approach, one always chooses to develop analytical solutions to the problem because having a direct solution of a problem allows us to obtain exact results. However, most of the time it is not possible to obtain exact mathematical solutions for complex real-world soil-mechanics problems since soils are nonlinear, heterogeneous and anisotropic materials. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to utilize numerical methods to approximate the actual soil behavior and develop accurate solutions. In this thesis, 1-D numerical solutions to the dynamic response of a soil column under surface excitations are developed using the Finite Element Method (FEM). In the first part of the thesis, the soil is considered as a porous medium, and its linear dynamic behavior is examined through 1-D FE analyses using linear bar-elements. The validity of this numerical study is confirmed by the available analytical solutions. Due to the fact that the actual behavior of the soil is inelastic, our attention is turned to the actual nonlinear behavior. Here, since there can be irreversible deformations taking place in the soil under cyclic loading, the "theory of plasticity" is employed to handle the related calculations. To start off, nonlinear elasto-plastic behavior of a solid material is evaluated by the stress-strain relationship which is then implemented in a MATLAB program in terms of a number of basic constitutive models. These are: the elastic-perfectly plastic model, elastic-linear isotropic hardening plastic model and the elastic-linear combined isotropic and kinematic hardening plastic model, which are considered to be the basis of the nonlinear part of this study. Then a number of single-degree-of-freedom systems (SDOF) are analyzed using such elasto-plastic behavior of the material. The nonlinear finite element analyses in this section involve solution of the stiffness relation using the 'Newton- Raphson Method' and updating its components iteratively at each time-step and calculating and updating the internal force obtained from the elasto-plastic stress-strain relationship as a result of updated degree of freedoms. Then this numerical analysis program, as developed for a SDOF system, is expanded by implementing the equation of motion written in terms of the governing equations of a solid soil element and subsequently of the equations of a porous soil element, into a large-purpose MATLAB code. This is a nonlinear dynamic finite element program developed to analyse a multi degree of freedom soil column under any loading. Our focus was on harmonic response of soil whose stress-strain behavior is governed by elastic-combined hardening plastic model. The FE solution of the nonlinear dynamic analysis of a porous soil column, which is verified for a single element behavior, constitutes the ultimate extent of this thesis study. Interesting results obtained from each chapter are presented at the end of respective sections and summarized in the conclusions. As for future works, it is planned to analyse the dynamic response of the soil with a more realistic nonlinear soil model able to capture the actual cyclic-plastic soil behavior using the gained knowledge on the nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis.
Depreme karşı yapı tasarımında dünyadaki yönetmelikler, ilk olarak can güvenliğini sağlamak üzerine yoğunlaşmıştır.

In the fifth chapter, fragility curves are obtained and the collapse risk has been calculated for each building under consideration. In the last chapter, the conclusions are presented.
Evaluating site effects for estimation of seismic ground response: A practical approach
Expansion of scientific methodologies to estimate the probable extents of ground motion effects in earthquake-prone areas is crucial for proper planning, investigation, and design of engineering structures. In this regard, accurate estimation of site effects instigated by the terminal geological structure at a considered location, in the presence of a seismic tremor, plays a particularly significant role. The key emphasis of this document is to develop a practical ground response analysis procedure comprised of a line of objective, well-outlined and simple-but-adept individual processes to address this aspect of the problem. In this study, to achieve that goal, a total of 1188 ground response analyses were performed for a combination of ground motion selection/scaling and equivalent-linear site response analysis techniques ? all of which by itself constitute the current agreed practice within their parts ? at 10 accelerometer sites. Each location evaluated herein was selected so that the recording station is a part of the Turkish Strong Ground Motion Network, with readily accessible, detailed geotechnical and geophysical reports; and at least a single earthquake event record, that correspond to the 10 per cent exceedance level in 50 years, existing. This allowed for a direct comparison of the result patterns obtained using each analysis component with the actual earthquake response; thus a truthful appraisal of how changing different parts of the overall procedure is reflected in the attained approximation level. For each station, the main output of the proposed method is a uniform hazard spectrum (UHS), fashioned in a similar way as that in major seismic codes. Therefore, as an auxiliary outcome of this assessment, a case study presenting the insufficiency of the currently adopted site factors for faithful estimation of site effects, and a vital application regarding how the suggested approach may play a role in improving the existing seismic code practice is as well provided.
Mitigation of earthquake induced geotechnical hazards using tire waste-sand mixtures
Seismic Isolation Systems are among tools to achieve advanced earthquake-resistant designs, developed in last century. Commonly, the applications are seen in cases which it is aimed to stabilize structures considered to have critical and expensive content in front of a strong ground motion. Recently, an alternative technique for seismic protection had been proposed involving mixing soil with tire waste and so improving the mixture?s dynamic properties, than placing it around structures foundations. This soil improvement called as Geotechnical Seismic Isolation (GSI) is supposed to improve especially damping property. It is claimed that, when placed to underlying soil layer of a structure subject to seismic movement, it would level down the soil?s seismic movement transmittancy. This study investigates the applicability of GSI with numerical analysis. Reprocessed Tire Waste-Sand Mixtures (TWSM) from Tire Buffings and Tire Crumbs; of which, mechanical and dynamic properties were revealed for different mixing proportions; are chosen as GSI material alternatives. A finite element program developed as a plug-in on QUAD4M, Equivalent Linear Analysis (ELA) Software, able to model structure-subsoil system is used to perform numerical analyses with the TWSM experimental data. In the results of numerical analyses, TWSM use as GSI material is examined regarding the effect of structure?s number of storey, weight ratio of tire crumb over TWSM, different earthquake records, changing TWSM layer thickness, and pile foundation. During analysis, different earthquake records have been applied to TWSM-structure systems differed in reinforced concrete structure rise (low-medium), and soil layer; different depths of TWSM and pile foundation. Reduction of acceleration motions of rigid structure and inter-storey drift are selected as performance indicators. Results are investigated to reveal the effect of TW inclusion to earthquake induced soil standing under a low-medium rise structure and to comment the functionality of the use of improved soil as geotechnical seismic isolation.
Use of distinct element method in the assessment of earthquake behavior of masonry structures
There are a number of masonry structures in Istanbul and in other cities of Turkey that suffered severe damage from earthquakes. As they will continue to get affected by the earthquakes, more research is needed to assess their seismic dynamic behavior particularly in the states of large deformations/damage and collapse. This still remains as a challenge in spite of significant developments in understanding factors affecting the seismic resistance of masonry structures. The present thesis deals with non-linear dynamic analysis of masonry structures modelled through distinct element methodology. First, a masonry mosque has been built at 1:10 reduced scale and tested by subjecting it to a sequence of earthquake excitations on the shake table in three phases: test of the base-isolated model, of the model as it is and that of the strengthened model. The results of these three phases were used in the calibration/validation of the numerical model developed by distinct element approach. It has been concluded that the methodology and the elements developed in this stage are good enough to be employed in the investigation of real masonry structures. In the second stage, three masonry minarets in Istanbul were studied under sine waves (velocity amplitude range: 10 cm/s – 100 cm/s; frequency range: 0.1 Hz – 13 Hz) and under real and simulated earthquake ground motion. The deformation levels and patterns induced in the minarets and the energy balance in the system are investigated to analyze the damage processes.
Alternatif dinamik parametrelerin ve deprem yüklemesinin deprem davranişina etkileri
This study covers three main topics, which are directly related to dynamic behaviour of structures, namely, representation of mass, damping and loading. These three properties of equation of motion are generally represented by widely accepted approaches. In this thesis, such representations are discussed via comparisons with infrequently used representations and viability of them is investigated. For case study, 50-story core wall structure is chosen. First topic discussed here is mass representation. Indisputably, the most accepted assumption for mass representation is lumped mass approach, which is very practical to construct the matrix or, at least, easy to understand the concept of. Another representation, not common one, consistent mass approach derived by a similar procedure in the method for derivation of stiffness coefficients. Consistent mass matrix has off-diagonal terms as distinct from lumped mass matrix. Since the core wall has a continuous form, it is reasonable to represent its mass distribution with consistent mass approach, which takes into account coupling terms. Effects of consistent mass representation on dynamic response of a 50-storey core-wall tall building are investigated. Second one is damping property which may be evaluated as one of the most controversial aspects of structural dynamics. As it is not possible to derive a damping matrix from the element cross section properties and material properties directly, proportional viscous damping matrix is generally used instead, which is defined in terms of modal damping ratios at certain anchor frequencies. However, viscous damping model has a significant deficiency associated with the energy mechanism. Studies based on experimental data show that dissipated energy per cycle of an oscillating system is essentially independent of the excitation frequency as opposed to dependency inherent in the viscous damping model. Such damping model is called rate-independent or structural damping, which is conveniently modelled in the frequency domain through complex stiffness matrix. One of the aims of this study is to observe the effects of such an alternate damping model on the linear seismic response of a tall building. To this end, a 50-story core-wall tall building system is investigated. Drift and total acceleration response characteristics for a set of earthquake records are obtained from the analyses conducted through Fourier Transform. Last concept, probably the most innovative idea of this study, is related to loading part of equation of motion. It has been long applied that ground accelerations are used directly as force by multiplying floor masses, eventually, relative response quantities are obtained. The underlying idea of this loading concept is based on pseudo-static transmission assumption, which presumes that base displacement, in any time instant, is transmitted throughout building statically and naturally, such movement does not deform the structure. One of the aims of this study is to investigate viability of this concept. The motivation is based on the idea that if the building is tall enough, is it possible to be transmitted of base displacements throughout the building without generating any significant deformation? For this reason, absolute response and relative response quantities of the 50-story core-wall are obtained by using acceleration and displacement loading concepts respectively. Comparative results are given at the end.
Development and verification of seismic capacity and ductility demand estimation procedures for coupled core wall systems
Performance-based seismic design of tall buildings is of great importance as demands are increasing for incorporating structural safety in such challenging structures. Although a number of design guidelines and consensus documents have been published in the last few years regarding performance-based seismic design of tall buildings, there are still several issues need to be resolved. Coupled core wall systems composed of flanged (U, T, E or I shaped) walls coupled by coupling beams, represent the most commonly used structural system in tall buildings. Although experimental and analytical research is available regarding the behavior of coupled wall systems with rectangular walls, such systems are not representative of the current design practice. Efforts are necessary not only for a clear understanding of the behavior of coupled core walls both at the component and system levels, but at the same time for the implementation of research results into performance-based seismic design methodologies. In this study, capacity and ductility demand estimation procedures are developed for preliminary seismic design of coupled core wall systems. These procedures may be considered complementary to capacity design principles to be implemented during the preliminary design stage. Effective design parameters controlling the behavior of coupled core wall systems and relative importance of each design parameter are identified through verification studies of the proposed capacity and ductility demand estimation procedures as well as nonlinear response history analyses.
Faya yakin bölgelerde gerçekleşen yer sarsintilarinin deprem yalitimi uygulanmiş köprüler üzerinde yaratacaği etkiler
Bridges constitute one of the critical components of the modern transportation systems that need to be functional after major earthquakes. The seismic isolation method has been proposed as an innovative mature performance enhancement strategy to mitigate earthquake risks on bridges. This study aims to review the advances in the seismic isolation technology for bridge applications while assessing the suitability of isolation units in close proximity to active faults. Suite of ground motion sets with pulse and nonpulse contents were compiled from PEER and European Ground Motion Database. Two multi-span continuous reinforced concrete bridges are adapted to this study by considering distinct nonlinear properties of three isolation systems. The critical appraisal is given to the curved surface spherical friction sliders together with the evaluation of their modelling assumptions in finite element programs. The first bridge example is utilized to perform comprehensive parametric investigations. In contrast, the second bridge example is a part of large scale testing which requires to generate reliable analytic models for the Pseudo Dynamic (PsD) testing. It has been concluded that the effectiveness of isolation systems in reducing the demand parameters of both bridge models are demonstrated by analytical models. The reliability of implemented analytical models of the Rio-Torto Viaduct were justified through the conducted PsD test. Extensive parametric investigations were indicated that the suite of pulse dominated near source ground motions with coupled vertical components not only led to increase in the demand parameters of isolation systems but also exceeds the code-mandated factors for MCE level earthquakes.
Long-term dynamic response of hagia sophia in Istanbul to earthquakes and atmospheric conditions
The effects of atmospheric factors on structural behavior have gained more importance due to climate change as result of global warming in recent years. In this thesis, the effects of ground motions and atmospheric variations on the modal parameters of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, which is one of the most prominent structures created in the history and is in the UNESCO world heritage list, are examined. Firstly, the frequency variation of Hagia Sophia due to atmospheric conditions such as temperature, wind speed, humidity and precipitation has been assessed. For this purpose, acceleration records are divided into half-hour segments and the Fourier amplitude spectra of each segment are calculated using short-time Fourier transform. In this way, an annual frequency variation of the structure is achieved by combination of frequency values obtained from these spectra. Afterwards, the frequency variation of Hagia Sophia is compared with the variation of atmospheric conditions and the results are assessed individually. Secondly, the dynamic behavior of the Hagia Sophia during different earthquakes is analyzed. The modal parameters and mode shapes of the structure are determined. The decrease associated with the first two modal frequencies of the structure during each earthquake is calculated. Finally, the effect of maximum acceleration and duration of strong ground motion on modal frequencies of the structure is investigated.

A proposed ground motion selection and scaling procedure for nonlinear response history analysis
With the advancement in performance-based earthquake engineering, nonlinear response history analysis of structures has become more common in recent years. The selection and scaling of ground motions for use in nonlinear response history analysis is one of the most critical steps in performance-based seismic assessment procedures. This study presents ground motion selection and scaling procedure that addresses the uncertainty in the spectral demand with the preserved dispersion within the ground motion set. The candidate ground motion sets are constructed based on dispersion statistics about the target spectral demand. The optimum ground-motion set is linearly scaled by using an optimization algorithm that minimizes the error between scaled median and target spectra. The scaling stage ensures that the median record spectrum provides a reasonable match to target median in a previously defined period interval. This procedure allows performing further modification on each scaled ground motion in order to match the target variance of the scenario-based spectrum. In this study, a novel probabilistic framework is presented to propagate the uncertainties in both ground motion intensity and the structural response on fragility curve estimations. To investigate the effects of uncertainties on seismic damage estimations, the results of this study are compared with those obtained by the conventional fragility curve approach.
Characteristic structural features of tall buildings in Turkey and their dynamic behavior
High-rise reinforced concrete (RC) shear wall buildings having 10 to 30 stories in metropolitan cities of Turkey are investigated under the systematic framework of Performance Based Earthquake Engineering (PBEE). A building inventory is compiled entailing blueprints of tall buildings in densely populated areas of the cities: Istanbul, Ankara, Bursa and Mersin primarily to represent the tall building stock. These buildings are thoroughly investigated via statistical methods to develop six reference building models. The recently proposed Conditional Spectrum (CS) is used as a tool to scale the selected ground motions which provided the link between the target hazard at the reference site (represents high seismicity) and structural responses. It is concluded that the high-rise RC shear wall buildings designed by Turkish engineering practice in metropolitan areas show satisfactory performance up to 475-year return period ground motions. However, the increase in ground motion hazard (e.g., 2475-year, maximum considered) may result in irreparable and severe damage states for these buildings, which may be mostly critical in terms of economic losses. The results obtained from this study can be used as reference source for future studies on several other research topics on tall buildings such as estimating cost-effectiveness and vulnerability functions of high-rise building stock in earthquake-prone regions of Turkey.
Analysis and design of rocking structures
Due to their high dynamic seismic resistance, ancient columns survived the severe ground shaking through the ages. The high seismic resistance of ancient rigid columns standing unrestrained on a rigid base is due to the fact that these columns were designed by ancient architects based on an articulated mechanism. Due to the rocking working principle, recentering of these free-standing structures is achieved with gravity. Therefore, these "unconventional" rocking structures behave quite differently from conventional structures and may exhibit superior stability during earthquakes. In this dissertation, the dynamic response of ancient columns that are allowed uplift and rock motion when subjected to ground excitation was studied. This thesis aimed at investigating the dynamic rocking response of rigid blocks subjected to a variety of seismic excitations by performing numerical methods and contributing to the understanding of the fundamental dynamics of rocking systems. After deriving linear and nonlinear form of differential equations of motion about pivoting points, O or O', a set of numerical approaches were employed for the evaluation of the dynamic response of the rigid blocks. The formulation of analytical equations and numerical solution of the rigid rocking blocks to trigonometric pulses and real earthquake records is achieved using a routine adopted to the numerical computing MATLAB package. The energy loss due to the impact between the rigid block and the base during the rocking movement is included in the program as the "coefficient of restitution (COR)" as suggested by Housner (1963). Following chapters proceeds with examining the effect of changes in ground motion forms on overturning acceleration spectra (OAS). The influence of frequency and amplitude of the ground acceleration function on the overturning thresholds of rigid bodies were investigated. With the aim to see the scale effect on overturning curve, samples with different sizes and slenderness ratios were considered. Numerical results revealed that the rocking response of rigid bodies significantly alters with amplitude and frequency content of the ground acceleration, slenderness ratio as well as the size parameter.
6 şubat 2023 Kahramanmaraş-Gaziantep Türkiye depremi sonrası ampirik kırılganlık değerlendirmesi
Post-earthquake field damage assessment play a pivotal role in understanding the causes of extensive structural damage and provide critical data for deriving empirical fragility functions, which are integral to earthquake loss modeling. On February 6, 2023, Southeastern Türkiye was struck by two catastrophic earthquakes with moment magnitudes (Mw) of 7.7 and 7.6, causing widespread devastation across the region. In the aftermath, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change conducted an extensive damage assessment, surveying over 2 million buildings across 11 affected provinces. Using this dataset, this thesis aims at defining and constructing empirical fragility models as region-specific, which refers to building typology-free, considering on the (Mw) 7.7 earthquake, proposing 95\% confidence intervals via Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation as well. Damage probability matrices for each region are provided in terms of modified mercalli intensity (MMI). Subsequently, these curves undergo detailed statistical analyses to evaluate their reliability and accuracy. The fragility curves are developed using different land use classes to create urban-zone fragility models. This approach adjusts the curves to better represent urban areas and introduces a method for incorporating land use patterns into fragility assessments. Finally, the fragility functions are compared with existing curves to address regional disparities in construction practices and adherence to seismic codes.
Prediction of strong ground motion parameters using machine learning techniques
Peak ground velocity (PGV) and cumulative absolute velocity (CAV) are powerful intensity measures for quantifying potential earthquake damage. Reliable prediction of those parameters is of essential importance in the precise calculation of seismic hazard. Machine learning can provide accurate and reliable predictions of PGV and CAV due to handling nonlinear relationships, adaptability to changing conditions, automation, efficiency, and the potential for real-time predictions. This study aims to comprehensively compare the relative performance of six different machine learning algorithms for PGV and CAV prediction and develop the Turkiye-specific ground motion models with the most recent strong motion dataset. Support Vector Machine, Linear Regression, Random Forest, Artificial Neural Network, Bayesian Ridge Regression, and Gradient Boosting algorithms are evaluated and compared. The Turkish strong motion database, which consists of over 950 earthquakes occurring from 1983 to 2023, and a worldwide near-field earthquake database (moment magnitude≥5.5) are used for shaping the models' ability to learn and make accurate predictions. Various source, site, distance, and faulting parameters are considered as estimator parameters. Three feature selection methods, embedded, filter, and wrapper, are applied to determine the most suitable estimator parameters to predict PGV and CAV. Statistical evaluation metrics are employed to measure the performance of the models. Among algorithms, the Gradient Boosting algorithm shows remarkable success in the prediction of both PGV and CAV. PGV prediction performance is better when all estimator parameters are used together, while CAV prediction ability is better when user-selected parameters are utilized. Outlier elimination processes are found to be redundant in predicting the PGVs and CAVs of large earthquakes. The proposed PGV and CAV models are applicable to shallow crustal strike-slip and normal faulting earthquakes with moment magnitude ranging from 3.5 to 7.8 and Joyner and Boore distance up to 200 km.
Influence of kinematic soil-structure interaction on structural response
The Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) is a phenomenon that can significantly alter the free field ground motion and, therefore, needs to be considered in the design of structures, especially those founded on soft/weak soils. SSI can be incorporated into the dynamic analysis of structures by implementing foundation impedance functions (FIFs), which provide displacements and/or rotations of the soil-foundation system in terms of unit forces and/or moments applied at the foundation level. As the impedance functions are frequency dependent, the available commercial finite element software, based on the time domain framework, encounters difficulties implementing them. This thesis presents the design of discrete-time domain filters for the frequency-dependent FIFs associated with two selected types of foundation systems considering their geometry, embedment depth, and surrounding soil. The transformation has been obtained using the least squares approximation technique. The correlation between the obtained time domain filters and the actual frequency domain filters has been checked by using R-squared values. The proposed procedure, in which the FIFs act as filters capable of transforming the free field ground motions into the motion of the soil-foundation system, provides an easy way to incorporate SSI into the time-domain dynamic analysis of structures. The examples given also highlight the effect of different frequency content of the ground motion (GM) on the SSI. The results are presented to show the effects of SSI on both the response spectra and the structural response. Foundation input motions (FIMs) are applied to a 5-story building model, and the performance of the building under analysis is compared using free field motion (FFM) and FIM in terms of story displacements, inter-story drifts, top displacement, and base shear using the SAP2000 structural analysis and design program.
Seismic soil-structure interaction behavior of pile-supported wharf systems on liquefiable soils under 3-D excitation
The procedures currently used in the analysis and design of pile-supported wharf structures are inadequate to consider the important features of the systems under seismic excitation. Highly sophisticated analysis models employed in literature neglect the seismic excitation in longitudinal direction, while design approaches roughly incorporate this aspect but fail in accurate modeling of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects. Despite widespread use of very long multi-segmented wharves in marine construction practice, seismic analysis of these systems is generally overlooked. It is likely that such long structures exhibit varying soil stratification along the embankment in the longitudinal direction. In this regard, three-dimensional soil-structure interaction models are developed for multi-segmented wharf systems situated on liquefiable soil conditions, addressing a realistic engineering challenge. The analyses of these systems are performed under three dimensional seismic excitation and the outputs are meticulously processed to clearly demonstrate the outcomes. Finally, the findings are presented in proper order. The results indicate that SSI modeling and soil liquefaction play a crucial role in the seismic behavior of wharves. The impact of longitudinal excitation in liquefiable soil conditions significantly affects both soil and structural responses. The torsional response of structural systems is negligibly small. Analysis of multi-segmented wharf systems may only be required when varying liquefiable soil layers exist along the embankment. This study is expected to be a pioneering effort in the field of marine geo-structural engineering, potentially providing a base for the performance-based analysis and design of pile-supported wharf systems in the near future.
The effects of rotational component of Rayleigh waves on tall buildings
For a long time, seismic engineering only considered the translational components of seismic ground motion, ignoring the rotations. However, recent research in structural health monitoring has revealed that rotational components of seismic ground motion, particularly those of Rayleigh waves passing under a structure, can significantly increase displacement demands on buildings, especially those located in sedimentary basins. The behavior of buildings to rotational ground motion has not been extensively studied due to a lack of rotational records. Recently, effective methods have been developed to extract the rotational component of motion from the translational ones, and instruments capable of recording them have emerged. This allows us to study the behavior of structures to rotational ground motion. This thesis investigates the impact of rotational Rayleigh waves on tall building response by applying the rotational ground motion to single and multi-degree of freedom systems. The rotational motion is first formalized in the equation of motion for both linear and nonlinear single degree of freedom systems (SDOF). Then, earthquake ground motion records rich in surface wave content that are recorded in sedimentary basins are compiled, and their rotational components are extracted using the recently developed Normalized Inner Product (NIP) method. Those extracted rotational records belonging to Rayleigh waves are applied to a set of linear and nonlinear SDOF systems to observe their effect on response spectra and inelastic deformation. Finally, the effect on the response of a representative tall building is studied by applying the extracted rotational records to it. The response is compared with and without the presence of rotational Rayleigh waves.
Field and laboratory experiments to evaluate the effects of improvement techniques on seismic performance of highway embankments
Highway embankments have experienced earthquake-induced damages from minor to catastrophic scales during the past few decades despite the fact that highways are considered as major lifelines that should be in continuous operation under any circumstances. Recent advances in highway engineering suggest that geosynthetic reinforcement can be considered as a novel approach to mitigate earthquake hazards on highway embankments by reducing the effects of earthquake-induced dynamic forces successfully. The objective of this thesis is to assess the seismic performance of highway embankments as well as to evaluate the effects of improvement techniques in terms of dynamic performance of the models by performing a series of full-scale seismic performing tests and reduced scale shaking table experiments. Field experiments include the dynamic performance tests of unreinforced, geogrid reinforced and EPS geofoam highway embankments in the proposed test area using the Mobile Seismic Shaker. Local site conditions and the wave propagation properties of the test area have been investigated with the help of the geophysical and geotechnical experiments. before the full-scale seismic performance test stage. A series of shaking table tests of the 1/10 scale of the shake table models were performed. The experimental results were evaluated comparing the acceleration and displacement responses of the highway embankment models. Obtained results from full-scale experiments reveal that transmitted accelerations are up to 68.8% and 80%, and displacements are up to 95.1% and 99.3% less for the geogrid reinforced and EPS geofoam embankment models. Similar results were also obtained from shaking table experiments as geogrid reinforcement and EPS geofoam inclusions can notably enhance the structural stability and resilience of the embankment.
Effects of geosynthetic reinforcement on the seismic performance of buried pipes
Buried pipelines are critical for transporting water, sewage, gas, and other essential utilities, and their failure during seismic events can lead to significant disruptions and damages. This thesis examines the effect of different geogrid layer arrangements on the seismic behaviour of buried High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes through a series of shaking table experiments. The study evaluates the effectiveness of different geogrid reinforcement configurations on the seismic performance of the buried pipe. A comprehensive experimental program was conducted, involving 15 shaking table tests under 3 different earthquake motions. Geogrid layers were positioned, and five cases were examined: an unreinforced control case, pipe wrapping with geogrid, two layer of geogrid, three layer of geogrid and four layer of geogrid. The test results demonstrate that geosynthetic reinforcement might improves the seismic performance of buried pipes. In particular, the tests showed that the different geogrid arrangements resulted in varying improvement percentages in the seismic performance of buried pipes. These findings highlight the potential use of geogrids to enhance the seismic performance of buried pipe, offering valuable insights for designing more safe pipe systems in earthquake-prone regions.
Source characterization of small to moderate earthquakes in the East Anatolian fault zone
Source characterization of small to moderate shallow earthquakes in the East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ) is studied through strong motion recordings in a broadband frequency range. Following the 2020 Mw 6.8 Sivrice earthquake in the Puturge segment of the EAFZ and the 2023 Pazarcik-Kahramanmaras and Ekinozu-Kahramanmaras earthquakes with moment magnitudes of Mw 7.7 and Mw 7.6, respectively, seismicity in the region has increased significantly. Source features such as strong motion generation areas (SMGA), stress drop, and rise time of 11 moderate-sized earthquakes (5.0 < Mw < 6.8) spanning a region from the Puturge segment to the Amanos segment have been determined using the Empirical Green's Function (EGF) Method. Source parameter determination with simulations requires the optimal match between observed and simulated earthquake waveforms; however, there is a lack of consensus regarding the numerical expression for evaluating the adequacy of the fit in the EGF method. The best source parameters were identified by evaluating the average Goodness-of-Fit (GOF) based on nine different evaluation criteria, considering energy content and peak values, as well as frequency and time domain characteristics of the observed and simulated waveforms. The analyses revealed that stress drop in SMGA exhibits considerable variability, ranging from 0.75 to 22.3 MPa. It was found that small events at the southwestern tip of the Puturge segment released stress drops as high as those of moderate-size events, suggesting potential for future seismic activity. Additionally, the study evaluated the consistency of the source parameters with global self-similar scaling relationships for earthquakes of different magnitudes. The calculated SMGA is smaller than rupture area estimations for smaller events. Conversely, SMGA for larger earthquakes closely follows the combined area of the asperity trend. For this reason, this study contributes to a new region-specific Mo-SMGA relationship for the EAFZ. The rise time derived from the simulations is consistent with global source relationships, indicating that the results conform to established global scaling laws.
Seismic behavior of three dimensional reinforced concrete structures under multiple earthquake excitations
Earthquakes that occurred in Turkey and in many other regions in the world showed that many foreshocks and aftershocks occur before and after an earthquake. According to conventional codes, one earthquake scenario is taken into consideration and related design is established. Experiences reveal that even if structures provide required performance level during main earthquake, they cannot provide required strength and rigidity during aftershocks. Moreover, as a result of carried studies, it's seen that materials of structures which were exposed to effects of an earthquake, don't show the same behavior as they did before the earthquake. Within the context of this study, six buildings, three of which is regular and the three other of which are irregular, are evaluated under 11 March 2011 Tohoku earthquake series. Two different material models, which take into account stiffness degradation and strength deterioration, were used during the structural modeling. In addition, structures modeled with the material models, which have non-degrading effect. Comparison and assessment of the results of regular and irregular structures, was carried out with different material models under multiple seismic excitations.

Estimation of member forces in Fatih Sultan Mehmet (FSM) Suspension Bridge from ambient vibration records
Suspension bridges are critical lifeline structures in transportation systems. Most suspension bridges, built in recent years, have monitoring systems to identify and track any changes in their dynamic characteristics. Such systems are useful for reducing the cost of maintenance during the life of the bridge, as well as assessing the structural safety for any extreme loading condition, such as those induced by large earthquakes and strong winds. The standard approach for analyzing data from the monitoring systems in suspension bridges has been modal analysis, where the dynamic response is approximated as the sum of modal responses, each defined by its modal frequency, damping ratio and the mode shape, which are identified from vibration records. Theoretically, modal analysis is appropriate for linear structures with mass and/or stiffness proportional viscous damping. Modal analysis is not appropriate for suspension bridges for several reasons. The dynamic behavior of a typical suspension bridge is not linear. Their size and flexibility make them geometrically nonlinear. In addition, their mass is not constant. They have time-varying mass due to moving traffic loads, which can be a significant portion of total mass in modern suspension bridges with lightweight steel decks. Also, all vibration records from suspension bridges show that damping identified, does not satisfy the requirements of classical modal damping (i.e., mass and/or stiffness proportional), and it is not a viscous type. Therefore, alternative methods for the analysis of vibration data from suspension bridges are needed. This study presents an alternative method for system identification of suspension bridges from their vibration records. Instead of identifying the modal properties of the bridge, the method aims to identify the forces in the principal bridge elements (i.e., main suspension, back-stay and hanger cables and towers). Based on some simplifying assumptions, this study first develops the equations that relate the element forces to the fundamental frequency of that element. The fundamental frequencies of the elements are identified from the ambient vibration records taken on the element. Using the equations developed, the forces in each element are calculated, and crosscheck to confirm that they satisfy the boundary conditions at element junctions. The methodology is tested by using the vibration records from one of the suspension bridges in Istanbul. Currently, Istanbul has three suspension bridges over the Bosphorus, and all installed with real-time monitoring systems. These bridges connect Asian and European parts of Istanbul, and are the critical lifelines for the city. The bridge used for the test is the second Bosphorus Bridge, known as the Fatih Sultan Mehmet (FSM) Bridge, which is between the first and the third suspension bridges on the Bosphorus with a daily traffic load of approximately 200,000 vehicles. The bridge is being monitored with a real-time Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system composed of 44 channels of acceleration sensors. The forces in the members of the bridge are calculated by the methodology presented in this study. The results are compared to those from previous investigations (e.g., field tests, analytical models and design calculations), and are found to be consistent. The study shows that the fundamental frequencies of members identified from ambient vibration records provide a simple means to estimate the forces in the elements of suspension bridges.
The number of tall buildings has been increasing all around the world due to the current population growth and limited space in city centers. After major earthquakes, countries located in earthquake-prone areas face catastrophic conditions. In addition to building damages, deaths, and injuries, financial losses due to business interruption are also an important part of overall earthquake losses. Therefore, buildings home to organizations such as financial institutions, health care facilities, governmental buildings need to remain functional following an earthquake to constrain financial losses and secure public services. The condition of structures can be estimated by evaluating the change in the in-situ dynamic characteristics of the structures in real time day by day. In this study, the dynamic parameters of the Sapphire Building during strong wind and earthquake records are estimated in the time and frequency domain. Earthquake and wind events were selected from catalogs derived from Bogazici University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute Regional Earthquake-Tsunami Monitoring Center and Bogazici University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute Meteorology Laboratory. In time domain analyses, correlations between peak accelerations, velocities, displacements; and magnitude and distance are estimated. The effects of faraway earthquakes on displacement time histories and damping are also investigated. Average drift ratios, computed from both wind and earthquake records, are compared with the limitations provided in the codes. In the frequency domain, natural frequencies, damping, and mode shapes are identified by means of spectral analysis for wind and earthquake data. The result of wind and earthquake events on the Sapphire building are compared.
An evaluation of the behaviour of rc bridge piers under vertical and horizontal components of earthquake ground motion
Reinforced concrete (RC) bridges with single piers have been used extensively in Turkish highways. During the past earthquakes in Japan, USA and New Zealand extensive damages occurred in the single piers indicates the inadequacy of seismic design. In the design of the concrete bridge piers, generally horizontal earthquake forces are taken into consideration. An additional P-∆ effect occurs when the horizontal earthquake effect and the vertical earthquake effect act together on the bridge piers with a large beam cantilever width. The effect of additional P-∆ effect under the effect of vertical earthquake may increase the bending moment and shear forces values in the columns and the piers supporting the bridge may experience damage. Another circumstance encountered in large-scale projects is the use of filler material as a dump / storage area under bridge piers. This causes a certain part of the bridge pier heights to remain under the soil filling material and shortens the free pier height. For a single column pier of a conventional bridge maximum moment and shear values occur at the bottom of the column under seismic forces. This region where the maximum stress occurs is designed to be the plastic hinge region of the column. Maximum shear and longitudinal reinforcement used in the plastic hinge region to provide the conditions is stated in the regulations. When the part of the column is buried under the soil, maximum moment and shear force values of the bridge columns may not occur at the bottom of the column but at the upper end of the buried height. Therefore, the critical section of the column will be above the bottom of the column which was not considered in the seismic design. The amount of longitudinal and shear reinforcement may also be inadequate than the required reinforcement to resist the seismic forces which may cause the flexural and shear failure. In this study, a single 30 m-tall RC pier of a conventional bridge is examined under horizontal and vertical components of three separate earthquake records for three different deck to pier flexural stiffness ratios. Conventional bridges are constructed with movement joints and connections. The pier has a monolithic 15m-wide cap beam. The height of the cap beam is increased to provide different flexural stiffness ratios between column and cap beam. As the flexural stiffness of the cap beam is increased, the change in the column shear force and moment due to additional P-Δ effect of vertical component of earthquake is investigated. As a result, only the horizontal impact of the earthquake and the effect of both horizontal and vertical earthquakes are compared for the column forces. Secondly, the single pier of the conventional bridge with the same geometric properties is investigated for the cases that it is buried under 5 m, 10 m and 15 m of earth fill. The horizontal components of the same earthquake records are used in the analysis. Force-deformation relation of the soil is represented by non-linear p-y springs for the buried cases.
A comparison and evaluation of different soil-structure-interaction approaches for bridges
During the last fifty years, bridge construction has increased extensively throughout the world, including on areas with bad soil conditions, to meet the transportation needs of expanding urban areas. Although Soil-Structure-Interaction (SSI) procedures for performance-based design of buildings have been introduced in design guidelines, seismic provisions are not clearly stated for bridges. There are two main approaches to include SSI in performance-based design of the bridges; direct method and substructure method. In the direct method, bridge and soil systems are analyzed as a single system under seismic shaking, defined at bedrock. As an alternative, the substructure method is introduced to solve the system as substructures in two stages, called kinematic interaction and inertial interaction. The nonlinear response of piled foundation systems of bridges are subjected to kinematic interaction; whereas, the nonlinear response of superstructure is subjected to inertial interaction. In this study, first, he linear design of two different bridges are introduced by considering their geometry and the number of spans. Bridge-I has three spans with uneven pier heights, and Bridge-II has four spans with identical piers and the geometry. Both bridges are designed based on a response spectrum created according to site response analysis and used in the performance-based design of the bridges. 19 different records are selected and scaled according to the criteria given in AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications Article 4.7.4.3.4 (AASHTO, 2012) Seismic Design Guidelines. Seismic records are categorized with respect to soil parameters, chosen for both strength-based and performance-based design of bridges. Secondly, using the direct method, the Nonlinear Time History (NTH) analyses are performed for both bridges to investigate the behavior of structural elements. The nonlinear responses of the bridges are re-calculated by using the substructure method, including the kinematic and inertial interactions. Responses of the structural elements are combined according to commonly-used combination rules. Finally, results of these methods are compared with each other, as well as the linear response of the structures, to underline how the behavior of the structures vary according to different analysis methods.
Development of peak ground acceleration (PGA) based pre-code reinforced concrete frame building fragilities for istanbul
An important portion of pre-code building stock in Istanbul runs significant earthquake risk. Given a building class, the uncontrolled construction of pre-code buildings in the past leads to a considerable model variability and complicates the prediction of losses for future earthquakes in Istanbul. However, the social and economic loss estimations are necessary for Istanbul to have planned actions to improve the earthquake resilience in the city. At this point, fragility curves; which represent the exceedance probability of a particular damage state are one of the most important components of resilience-based building inventory studies for large building stocks at large metropolitan areas. This study aims to provide fragility curves for pre-code reinforced concrete frame residential buildings in Istanbul. For this purpose, 800 mid-rise frame buildings located in the Zeytinburnu district in Istanbul are compiled and 16 representative building models are developed to account for the model variability of the same building class. The examined buildings do not comply with the code requirements of any period after 1975 and they can be considered as low code. The fragilities are based on Peak Ground Acceleration because such practical ground-motion intensity measures are being popularly used in the loss assessment of large building stocks. Nonlinear building responses are derived from three-dimensional nonlinear response history analysis that are carried out by using OpenSees Software (Open System for Earthquake Simulation). Incremental Dynamic Analysis is performed to determine the statistical distribution of the response parameters. A set of real ground motions, which are consistent with the disaggregation results of a probabilistic seismic hazard assessment for Istanbul are considered in the development of fragilities for each building model. Therefore, the variability in building models of the same building class as well as the record-to-record variabilities are considered in the developed fragilities. The fragility model is a backbone cure with upper and lower bounds covering the model and ground-motion variabilities for mid-rise low-code reinforced concrete frame buildings in the investigated building stock.
Earthquake information system: A crowdsourcing mobile application to inform and gather data
It has been observed that large earthquakes, which have taken place in Turkey and around the world during the last 10 years, could cause great social and economic losses in centers that are densely populated. It is crucial that regions, which had been affected by the earthquake, should be identified fast and in the correct way in order that search, and rescue activities could be carried out effectively. Evaluation of place and level of damage promptly following a destructive earthquake through the data received from emergency intervention systems could facilitate the earthquake emergency response process. In this respect, numerous institutes around the world have introduced on-line earthquake intensity surveys in order to establish internet based macro-seismic maps and hence to determine the regions that are affected by the earthquake the most. The purpose of the surveys is to establish earthquake intensity map immediately after the earthquake by collecting macro-seismic intensity data from the people who feel the earthquake. This project aims to collect this information from the individuals, spread around Turkey, using a mobile application which works both ways: One part of the application gives information about the recent earthquakes, seismicity history of the current location of the user, individual's distance to epicenter etc. The other part of the application lets the user to provide KOERI how he/she felt the earthquake by answering some multiple-choice questions. While answering these questions, the application also records the geographic location of the user. This information is then stored in the central database and can be used for further analysis of the impact of the earthquake and for fine-tuning the instrumental intensity maps.
Earthquake early warning applications using downhole arrays in Istanbul
The Kocaeli (Mw 7.5) and Düzce (Mw 7.2) earthquakes that occurred in 1999 revealed the fact that the earthquakes in Marmara Region should be considered especially in terms of the damage that may result in Istanbul. An Emergency Response and Early Warning System was established to reduce possible losses after a damaging earthquake in Istanbul and to produce Rapid Loss Maps to assist rescue teams with emergency response. The main element of the Earthquake Early Warning is the rapid and reliable estimation of the magnitude of the earthquake. In order to calculate the magnitude of the earthquake, it is necessary to determine whether the earthquake fracture will continue or not. This is generally understood from the characteristics of the initial movement (P waves). For this purpose, the characteristics of P waves have been determined by using the τc - Pd method and the waveforms of earthquakes recorded by the vertical component acceleration sensors located on the bottom of the wells and on the surface. Most of the downhole array data is from ATK station. The surface records used are from the early warning stations operated by KOERI and the strong motion network operated by AFAD. As a result, two models have been developed to predict the magnitude of an impending large earthquake and the peak ground velocity (PGV) amplitudes associated with it. A verification process of the models has been applied to predict the moment magnitude of September 26, 2019 Mw=5.7 offshore Silivri earthquake. The models developed from the ATK downhole array predicted the size of the earthquake as Mw=5.8 within 7 seconds of the origin time which in turn yield about 15 seconds early warning time for most of the Istanbul Metropolitan area. The models developed using waveforms recorded at surface have predicted the size of the earthquake as Mw=6.1 which is comparable to the Mw=6.0 prediction of Wu and Kanamori (2005) model. The size and amplitude of the prediction models obtained in this study have been considerably improved compared to the models published a decade ago.
Comparative evaluation of codes and regulations in turkey for earthquake performance assessment of existing buildings
New Turkish Building Seismic Code published in 2018 has been officially in force since January 1, 2019. The new code introduces significant changes not only in the countrywide seismic hazard maps but also in structural modeling and analysis issues for the design of new buildings as well as in the definition of performance objectives and assessment methodologies for existing buildings. In this study, a comparative earthquake performance assessment of a reinforced concrete building in Istanbul is presented. The building, which was constructed in 2006, has four stories rising above a basement floor. The lateral load-carrying system consists of moment-resisting frames with two shear walls around the staircase. Although it is assumed that the building was designed according to the provisions of the Turkish Building Seismic Code-1998, it was identified as a risky building last year based on the simplified guidelines by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization (Riskli Yapıların Tespit Edilmesine İlişkin Esaslar-2013). Earthquake performance of the study building is evaluated for the requirements of the new Turkish Building Seismic Code (2018) and of its previous version (2007) as well. For this purpose, a three-dimensional finite element model of the building is elaborated on the basis of the blueprints. Geometrical and material characteristics are further verified by the reports on in situ measurements and field tests. Linear and nonlinear static and dynamic analyses procedures are implemented, and a detailed assessment of the building against the performance criteria by each code is performed. Additionally, the building is assessed on the basis of the updated guidelines by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization (Riskli Yapıların Tespit Edilmesine İlişkin Esaslar-2019). Outcomes of the earthquake performance assessments are presented comparatively, and the differences/changes among the codes and guidelines are highlighted.
İstanbul'da yer alan ve yönetmeliklere uymayan orta katlı betonarme çerçeve binaların maksimum yer hızına bağlı kırılganlıkları
16 building models representing a building stock in the Zeytinburnu District in İstanbul that includes approximately 800 mid-rise reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings are used to develop PGV based fragility models that could partially represent the no-code building vulnerability in Turkey. The 3-D analytical models of the subject frames are modeled with distributed plasticity using the Open System for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (OpenSees) software. The damage states of the fragilities are determined by use of the performance limits of structural members from 2018 version of the Turkish Building Earthquake Code and 2005 version of the Eurocode 8. Peak ground velocity (PGV) is preferred as seismic intensity measure since it has a better correlation with deformation demands. 25 real ground motion pairs are selected using disaggregation results of three different PGV hazard curves determined from three ground motion predictive models that are used in the development of the most recent national seismic hazard maps. Response statistics are kept through incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) to develop fragilities for each model. The fragilities computed from above comprehensive nonlinear response history analyses advocate that consideration of variabilities in (a) structural models, (b) ground motion records and (c) limit states makes a huge impact in the exceedance probabilities of damage states. Therefore, a backbone fragility model, which covers the above uncertainties by up and down scaling of a central model is a must in proper loss assessment of building stocks.
