The evaluation of 100 Basic Works in terms of vocabulary acquisition (It is in the example at five works chosen from 100 Basic Works which are suggested to second grade primary school by Ministry of Education)

In this study it?s aimed to evaluate of suggested 100 Basic Work for the second stage of primary education (6,7,8. Grades) in terms of word acquisition.The implementation of the research was made in two state schools in Pendik and Üsküdar in İstanbul. From these schools four classes were chosen randomly. Two classes were experimental group and the other two classes were control group. There were a hundered and twenty students in total. They were divided to four groups and each group consisted of 30 students. Pretest-posttest control grouped experimental design model was used for them.With the direction of the Turkish teachers who helped the application from 100 Basic Works five books,?? Altın Işık, Tiryaki Sözleri, Türk Atasözlerinden Seçmeler, Mevlana?nın Mesnevisi?nden Seçmeler, Karagöz-Hacivat?? were chosen to be read to experimental group. From these works a hundered and fifty words (idiom, compound verbs ) were determined by the direction of the teacher who helped the application. During the application these chosen words and phrases were asked to the students with the different test techniques.During the ten-month implementation of the research while the experimental group was reading the chosen books within the framework of a specific plan, any action was made for the control group. The student recognition survey" was applied first to know the individuals of the each of the four groups better and determine their equality / difference between the groups. Before and after the experimental group read each book, the same pre-test and post-test were asked to each four groups applying the same method. It was analyzed using SPSS 11.5 program.In the study, from non-parametric statistical analysis methods Mann Whitney U was used to compare the two independent groups. When there was significant difference between the groups Mann Whitney U Test was used by matching two pairs to determine the source of the difference. Wilcoxson Signed Rank test was used for the repeated measurements to compare the pre and post test results of experimental and control groups. To describe the research data, frequency was used.As a result of this research those findings were made;100 Basic Works are effective to have reading skill acquirement of Turkish lesson.To learn a new word the students didn?t look up the dictionary. The students? habit of using the dictionary should be improved. A large responsibility belongs to the Turkish teachers about it.Reading of all 100 Basic Works doesn?t implement because of lack of time in five- hour Turkish lesson per week. These works should be read with the free reading activities. Students' free reading habits should be developed.Key Words: 100 Basic Works, Reading Skill, Vocabulary Acquisition, Free Reading.
