The concordance of the values in 100 basic works and the values in social studies curriculum

In this study, the concordance of the values in"100 Basic Works" ,recommended by the Ministry of Education for elementary schools, and the values specified in the list of elementary 5th grade social studies curriculum was examined. Qualitative research methodology was benefited in the study. The data source for the study is the "100 Basic Works" recommended by the Ministry of Education for elementary schools Primary schools in recommended by the Ministry of Education. The study group is a total of twenty-one (21) books out of "100 Basic Works" including twelve (12) local and (9) foreign writers. Those books, which were grouped according to numbers of pages, were chosen by maximum diversity sampling method. The values in the domestic and foreign authored books that make up the sample were analyzed and the results of analysis examined the values in domestic and foreign authored books.The most common values in the domestic and foreign authored books were found as love, charity, respect, aesthetics, friendship, compassion, courage, hope, compassion and value of being successful. The least common values were observed as protecting the fiduciary, self-sacrifice, consultation, mannerliness, paying attention to be healthy, prudence, openness to innovation, ethicalness, love of nature, equality, tolerance and conscious for national unity, moderation, simplicity and elegance Among the books that were examined, the values which take place in the social studies curriculum most were found as love, charity, respect, aesthetic and freedom. The other values that were observed in the books were paying attention to be healthy, tolerance, peace and independence. Among the values identified in both local and foreign books, the values that support the ones which take place in the social studies curriculum such as independence, aesthetics, hospitality, paying attention to be healthy and cleanness could not be found. Results revealed that there were some expressions in local and foreign authored books that damage the values in Social Studies Teaching Program.Key words: Social Studies Teaching Program, values education, 100 Basic Works
