Abstract (EN)

Along 1945-1990, the years that the Cold War was experienced, the Soviet Union and the United States (US) were the main pioneers in the confrontation between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. The two blocs? countries considered each other to be the main enemy against the other. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the relationship between Russia and the US has undergone substantial changes. Both countries defined their relationship as a ?strategic partnership? in early 90?s. Today a US-Russian Federation (RF) relation has a complex structure covering both the conflicting and coinciding interests. The main thesis of this study, using the neorealist theory, is that the ?unipolar moment? is a geopolitical interlude that will give way to multipolarity (or multi-centrism) along 2000-2010: The Unipolarity is an illusion and the new great powers will rise. The argument relies on the premise that states balance against hegemony, even those like the United States that seek to maintain their preeminence by employing strategies based more on benevolence than coercion. Basically it is argued that the sole superpower of the post-cold war period, namely the United States, will be balanced, a process already underway, by other great powers and that the Russian Federation under the President Vladimir Putin, became one of the striking candidate for this post.
