In Ottoman period, gardens and flowers were indispensable parts of the palace life. It can be said that Ottoman palace gardens were influenced by the context of paradise garden based in Eastern philosophy and religious belief. One of the flowers in these heavenly palace gardens are carnations. The carnations which attracted the palace painters attentions appeared in the 16. century art works as the ornament style. Carnations motifs, which were enriched by the palace painters in the shops supported by the sultans were used in miniature, gild, carpet, tile, fabric as a ornament style. Technical in every kind of art ınfluenced various features of ornaments. These effects can be observed in carnation motifs in Ottoman art. This study consist of three parts. İn the first part; the classification has been done by examining form characteristics of carnation motifs in Ottoman palace art. According to this classification, the carnation motifs and their characteristics have been explained and the miniature, gild, tile, carpet, fabric samples in 16.-17. century have been presented. One of the most important parts of Ottoman palace art is fabric. In the second part, the samples in 16.-17. century in which carnation motifs were used as ornament forms have been presented carnation motifs were used widely in çatma and kemha in these fabrics. In this part, technical and design features of çatma and kemha have been studied and explained. Carnation motifs in the tables have been studied and explained in the certain samples. The motifs used as ornament forms in 16-17 century palace fabrics are studied in available documents. The features of carnation motifs such as form, size, composition, harmony, usage form are examined on fabrics samples. In the third part, 16. and 17. century Ottoman fabric designs is evaluated in general. Additionally, created by carnation motif examples in 16-17 century kemha and çatma fabrics, as determined have been presented upholstery fabric designs. In conslusion, the features of carnation motifs such as form, size, composition, harmony, usage form have been studied.
