The administrative, social and economical condition of Istanos (Korkuteli) (1839-1917)

A city's historical researches play a great role on determining of a certain region's social, economical and cultural assets. Istanos, for years, was an important settlement place governed as an town which was under the authority of Teke Sanjak until 20th century., Istanos was named Korkuteli due to the bureaucratic efforts between 1914 and 1917. The aim of this study, to picture the conditions of Istanos between 1839 and 1917. In this study, the Shari'a Court Records of Antalya, the Revenue Tax Registers of Istanos, the population census records of Antalya, the Yearbooks of Konya Province and various documents from the the Prime Minister's Ottoman Archives have been used. Istanos have neen studied thoroughly under three main topic: administrative, social and economical stuations. Istanos' family structure, cultural assets, educational system, the structure of soil, agriculture and the economical activities are examined. The study shows that Istanos was an important summer resort area and Istanos was seen as a good investment area for the residents of Antalya. Istanos' local people, Turkish Nomad People presence in Istanos and their social and economical conditions are also mentioned in the study in detail. The contributions of agriculture, livestock, handicrafts and small-scale production activities of Istanos to the economic accumulation of the Empire have been examined.
