Abstract (EN)

Kaş district in Antalya, one of the most important port cities in the Mediterranean, is an ancient district which has hosted many civilizations throughout history. In this research, the social and economic conditions of Kaş in the 19th century is tried to be revealed. Accordingly, the notebooks and documents in the Ottoman archives were used as sources. In this research, the settlements and the population of Kaş in the 19th century are identified and a detailed evaluation is presented regarding the social lives of the people in the district. According to the population book of the year 1831 in Kaş; 2 neighborhoods, 39 villages and 7 Yörük peoples; according to the population book of the year 1840, 2 neighborhoods, 44 villages; according to the temettuat book of the year 1844-45, 2 neighborhoods and 42 villages are presented. The population of the district increased from 7620 to 10769, according to the calculations made from the census in 1831 to the temettuat census in 1844-45. Data which was obtained from the findings shows that a part of the people of Kaş transitioned from a nomadic lifestyle to a settled life in the middle of the 19th century. The economic activities are also presented in the research by means of the temettuat books in the Ottoman archives. Based on this, it has been seen that the people in the district earn their lives through agriculture and husbandry. In particular, the facilities of Yörüks in terms of husbandry and the hardship they went through with the Ottoman Empire from time to time are significant data in this research. With this research, it is aimed to remind the identity of Kaş, a touristic destination nowadays, throughout history
