Diplomatic Activities untill 1850 of Kostaki Musurus Pasha, who was a non-muslim Ottoman Diplomat, in the 19 th century

KEYWORDS: Kostaki Musurus Pasha, Kostaki Musurus was the first non-muslim pasha and the first non-muslim ambassador of the Ottoman Empire in Greece also he was the first ambassador who stayed in London long time. Mr. Kostaki, his family was Byzantine Greek from Fenerli. They called "Musurus" he got his family name. He was born in Arnavutköy in 1814/1815. He worked in the Sublime Porte as an interpreter for a while. He was promoted deputy of administrator to Sisam Island in April in 1834. He had been successful, he got support of people in Sisam. Also, he tried to stop rebellion while he was there. He stayed there about two years then he returns to Istanbul and he was rewarded a medal by II. Mahmut for his respectful job. Kostaki Musurus had been appointed to Greece in 1840, as a charge d'affaires. But he promoted with the residant (Küçükelçilik) by his father in law İstefanaki Vogorides recommendating, before he set of his journey to Athens. His Greek and French provided him to his duty as well as been Greek Nation. Ottoman Empire was accused as a racist by Greeks. Ottoman Government rejected his accutation by appointing Mr. Kostaki as an ambassador to Greece. Kostaki forced Greek Government to pay compensation for the Muslim properties that they left in Greek. He tried to make diffucult to be a representative in Greek assembly for people, who escape from Ottoman Empire. He made an effort to stop secret associations such "Eterya" activities. He did not give a visa to colonel of Greek Mr. Karatasso in 1847; because of he was an opposition of Ottoman Empire. For this reason king of the Greece insulted him with these words: " I think, king of the Greece deserve more respect than you had shown". Ottoman Empire made them apologize for their insulting to Mr. Kostaki but Greek Government refused this. As a result there was no further interest in between Greek and Ottoman Empire. But later Greek Government apologized Mr. Kostaki Musurus on 20 December in 1 847 under pressure of Russia and other countries. When Musurus backed to Greece to start his duty, he was attacked and injured in conspiracy. Ottoman Empire recalled him on 12 September 1848 and he was appointed to Vienna as an ambassador. While he was in Vienna he tried to solve Hungarian refugee problems. They settled in Kütahya by his offered. He had recalled from Vienna 13 September 1850. Later he was appointed to London as an ambassador for 35 years on 23 March 1851.
