Education in the thes Saloniki province based on the Maraif Sal-name of 1901-1902

Ottoman education history which constitutes an important stage in the Turkish Education History was based on the solid foundation together with the constitution of the state and, its legacy of works and institutions has played a role in the establishment of young Republic of Turkey. Thessaloniki, which was conquered for the first time in 1387 by the Ottomans, came out of the Turkish rule when a total control was not established. During the reign of Murat II, The city, which was in the hands of the Byzantine Empire was sold to Venetians upon the siege. The city which was taken to the siege again in 1430 was included to Ottoman lands by Murad II The city of Thessaloniki has had a cosmopolitan structure throughout history. It has been seen by many geographers as a part of Istanbul with its many ethnic elements. The education and training conditions of the Thessaloniki Province of the Ottoman State were evaluated on the basis of the salnames. Thessaloniki Maârif Sal-nâmesi R. 1315/1316 (M.1896/97, 1898/1999),One of Ottoman Vilayet Salnames, dated R. 1318 (M.1901/1902) was studied. Educational commissions in the province of Thessaloniki, schools, the number of students and teachers, other civil servants assigned in schools, libraries, printing houses and newspapers, non-Muslim and foreign schools were classified on the basis of salname documents. The study consists of five main sections. In the introductory part of the study, the problem status and objectives are explained and the importance of the study is mentioned. In the second part, the importance and definitions of sal-nâme in Ottoman history are made and the history of Ottoman education is mentioned under the titles of classical and modern period. The third part of the study consisted of the method part of the research. In the fourth section, the available data are interpreted and classified into tables. In the fifth and final section, the results of the study and suggestions are given. Sal-nâme entered our history in the middle of the 19th century and consisted of the Persian words "sal" (year) and "name" (letter). In the history of education, Maarif Salname was established while keeping the record of the provinces. In the study, the first part of the history of Ottoman education madrasah includes Enderun and Kanuni schools; in the modern period, it includes education and schooling innovations that came with the innovations of Tanzimat period and lasted during the Constitutional Period. The research was evaluated by using document analysis method. The documents are classified into tables after transcription. In the last days of the 19th century, it was seen that the city of Thessaloniki was distanced from the control of the Ottoman Empire. We conclude that many printing houses, newspapers and books are under the administration of non-Muslims. It is seen that İ'dâdî and military junior high schools located in the center of Thessaloniki are the most equipped schools in terms of teacher staff.
