The analysis of costumes based onthe characters designed for the American cinema between the Period 1950-1990

It is aimed to analyse in this thesis the effects of the costumes on the creation of the film characters, through the films produced by the American cinema within the period of 1950?1990. At the first chapter, the history of cinema is rewieved, together with the technological developments and the important eras that have formed todays cinema. At the second chapter, the perception of the audience at the cinema and the pyschological effects of the films on the audience are mentioned. The importance of the light, colour, make-up and music that means of expression are stressed. At the third chapter, the relation of cinema and fashion design are examined. The fashion movements between 1920?1990 are studied as based on the costumes that created by the influences from the social events, demands, reactions and needs. At the last two chapters, the main aim of the thesis, how the films influenced the fashion design and the public is aimed to explain. The leading films of the period (1950?1990) are evaluated by their costume design and their effects on the costumes are analysed. The main changes occurred on the women?s costume on this period, therefore, this study focused on the women?s fashion.During the study, the difficulties arose, due to the limited the sources on this topic and. The history of cinema, the resources on the films and the history of costumes were the basic sources of this study.
