Trends in socialist Turkish storytelling between 1960-1980

The years 1960-1980 were among the most turbulent periods in Turkey in terms of political, economic, social, cultural and artistic aspects. Coups, memorandums, strikes, lockouts, boycotts, union activities, student and worker protests, executions, right/left incidents, street fights, armed conflicts, unsolved murders in twenty years had deep effects in politicization of Turkish society, which was in the throes of modernization. These influences have shaped art - and especially literature - as in every period and era. Writers Peride Celal, Mehmet Seyda, Şükran Kurdakul, Adalet Ağaoğlu, Leyla Erbil, Füruzan, Ayhan Bozfirat, Selçuk Baran, Adnan Özyalçıner, Sevgi Soysal, Tomris Uyar, Aysel Özakın, Tezer Özlü, İnci Aral, Nazlı Eray, Şirin Erkök Yılmaz, Hulki Aktunç, Selim İleri, Nedim Gürsel and Ayşe Kilimci, who started to publish story books between 1960-1980, used the formalist story writing traditions of the past while processing the social events and phenomena of the period as content in their stories. These storytellers, who approached critically to the story writing styles of the 1940's and 1950's generations, developed new understandings of stories that reflect the spirit of the period. Social and critical realism, existentialism, feminist literary criticism, psychoanalysis, psychological story, sociopsychological prose, Kafkaesque narrative style are prominent theoretic tendencies in the stories of these authors. Event or situation story, stream of consciousness, inner speech, rhythm, atmosphere story, irony, humor, absurd, allegory, surreal, fantastic and minimal story are the dominant formal tendencies. In the thesis, the content and form tendencies of these storytellers are discussed.
