The study of history textbooks in Turkey between the years 1960-1980

In this study including the years between 1960-1980, the eleven textbooks,nine out of which in the secondary educations and two out of which have been taughtin the primary education, have been examined as Samples.In this study, the texbooks have been examined by dealing with from threeaspects; with in the framework of Kemalism, pre-islâmism the unit of Turkish States,with in the framework of Turkish-Islam, Great Seljukian Empire and within theframework of Europe (western), the European unit in the 15th and 16th centuries havebeen examined as samples.In the mentioned years, many problems available in the history textbookstaught in the secondary education have been determined. An order cannot bementioned in the teaching of the units which have been examined by dealing withinthe framework of Kemalism. A great many deficiencies have been available in theteaching of these unit in the textbooks. Although the subjects which have been taughtin the unit of Great Seljukian Empire studied within the framework of Turkish-Islamhave been ranged in designated ways, they are difficult in respect of curriculum.The subjects taught in the 15th and 16th century Europen unit which have dealtand studied in the framework of Europe (West) have shown integrity (unity) witheach other. While the culture subjects have been given priority considerably, the warand political history have been left background.The fact that examining the teaching in the textbooks in respect of auxiliarymaterials has revealed the deficiencies in this field in the mentioned years. The factthat these deficiencies should be examined and paid attention to them in thetextbooks which will be published in the following years will bring the historycourses taught in the secondary education to or more distinguished level.
