Abstract (EN)

This thesis investigates the national style problem in Turkish Graphic Design, particularly in the post-1960 period and the perspectives of the designers and graphic design instructors df the period. In the first two chapters of this work, several definitions of the concept of nationalism are presented through their components and then, on behalf of these definitions, two major impacts of nationalism on the graphic design discipline, that is to say, nationalism as a subject and nationalism as a style; are investigated. The last chapter on the post-1960 period concentrates on the factors that determine the national style in Turkish graphic design history and reports on the interviews with designers and instructors. The first two chapters and the first part of the last chapter consist of literature rewiews on the problem of nationalism in general and the second part of the last chapter is made of the results from the face-to-face and e-mail interwiews. Details of all interwiews can be found in attachments. Finally, the elaboration of the components that shape the concept of national style in Turkish graphic design suggests that the intentions and efforts of designers and instructors are not sufficent to constitute such a style which is systematic and independent. The reasons concerning this conclusion are also elaborated in this thesis.
