Abstract (EN)

In this study, the use of themes and images in Turkish painting in the period from 1960 until the present day has been examined through works of art and artists. Considering the historical process in this study, firstly the themes and images used at the origin of Turkish painting, the developments in the world simultaneously and the reflections of these developments on Turkish painting after 1960 were examined. Turkish society after the 1960s, the process of creating a new cultural identity can be described as the most intense period. At the end of the 20th century, political and ideological methods have failed and this is a period in which new searches are made. In this period, postmodernism, which is discussed in the intellectual and artistic fields, brings Turkish painting to a new era in terms of theme and image. In this sense, from the late 1960s onwards, many subjects, from personal life stories to fantasies, power, gender and identity problems, are used with different symbols that relate to the past but change their meaning in today's world. Also from past to present; the concepts of "theme" and "image" concepts within the most questioned by art historians, art critics, philosophers and artists, were discussed in the theoretical framework. Based on this information; In the study, the selected pictures were analyzed in terms of theme and image. Since the existence of art, death has been handled by painters. Death is one of the most important concepts that concern people. In all societies, death is an eventual event of the individual's life and a phenomenon that revolves around events. Death expresses the inevitable end of life. The artists did not remain silent and ignore the events and wars that took place in this century. They have reflected this in their work. Artworks appear as part of the process in which he lives.The theme of death has always been the subject of the works of artists and is one of the most emphasized subjects. The death themed called Vanitas, macabre, memento mori, paintings, sculptures and prints were produced. Expressing imaginatively is important in terms of art. The images which were taken in the context of death in Turkish painting after 1960 changed the point of view of death to death under Turkish painting art. The painting of violence and death can be seen centuries ago. But as a reflection of the social events and wars, violence and death began to become more visualized after the 1960s with the development of technology. In the picture, the death phenomenon and the theme of killing are heavily reflected in the compositions. On the basis of this, the imaginative approach, which changed after 1960s in Turkish painting art, can be said to have been dealt with in the form of death that has been put forward and reshaped according to the conditions of our times. As a requirement of their age, artists have observed the psychological and sociological events and situations from the point of view of death and made them one of the subjects of their art.
