Reflections of constitutional citizenship in social studies textbooks in 1968-2018

The aim of this study is to determine to what extent the understanding of 'constitutional citizenship' reflected on Social Studies textbooks in the period of 1968-2018. The case study design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in this study. Document analysis was used for data collection and analysis. The universe of the research is composed of the textbooks used between 1968 and 2018, and the literature studies in this field. The study consists of three main parts. In the first part, I focused on the concept of constitutional citizenship itself along with the historical processes of the concept of citizenship in order to create a strong context. In the second part, the relevant parts of the analysed textbooks are considered within the framework of the concept of constitutional citizenship, and in thefinal part analysed in terms of concept. In the light of the analysis and literature researches, the process of understanding of citizenship in 10 different educational periods covering a period of 50 years has been observed. Although there have been changes in the understanding of citizenship between these years, it has been determined that the concept of constitutional citizenship has not yet fully settled on an effective ground. Despite the thoughtful solution proposals brought by the understanding of constitutional citizenship, which we come across as a new concept and approach, in the interest of social consensus in culturally and ethnically rich countries, it has been determined that research and discussions on the concept in our country have been limited. In light of all this, the concept, both in itself and as a reflection in the textbooks between 1968-2018, has been thoroughly handled and evaluated, criticized, and subjected to recommendations.
