Analysis of orientalism in the perspective of Edward W. Said through space in the star wars movies from 1977 to 2019

Before Edward W. Said, Orientalism was regarded as a positive and/or unbiased method of researching and observing different cultures. Throughout history, many scholars and artists conducted studies and works as Orientalists. However,After Edward W. Said, the concept of Orientalism took on its widely accepted meaning, which is the way the West perceives the East, in the late 1970s. The origin of science fiction is attributed to Mary Shelley's literary work, "Frankenstein," published in 1818. It has been represented by numerous works since its inception and has gained importance with the addition of a 'vision' value, especially in the age of technology. The first cinematic example, the film "A Trip to the Moon" in 1902, based on a science fiction story, laid the strong foundation for the relationship between science fiction and cinema. Having a common beginning with the history of cinema, the concept of science fiction and cinema have made it possible to see another value.Thinkers like Adorno, who view popular culture as a means of transmitting ideas, perceive cinema as a medium for conveying ideas. In this context, Orientalism forms the basis of the thesis in science fiction cinema, which has existed since its inception. Starting with the first film in 1977 and continuing to the present, the 'Star Wars' franchise serves as the focal point for examining the concept of Orientalism through Edward W. Said's perspective, which emerged in the late 1970s. In line with this objective, the spatial constructions in Star Wars films will be analyzed for their Orientalist representations from Edward W. Said's perspective.
