Turkey-Israel alliance relations between 1990-2010

TURKEY-ISRAEL ALLIANCE RELATIONS BETWEEN 1990-2010 SUMMARY The topic of this thesis is how Turkey and Israel began their informal partnership at the level of a 'strategic alliance' in the period between 1990 and 2000. Then, how this 'strategic alliance' relationship came to an end in the second decade between 2000 and 2010. Within the scope of this thesis, the unchanging dynamic of the unofficial alliance relationship between the two states, 'threat perception', is emphasized. In this context, 'Realist Theory' has been utilized and the scientific basis of the study has been established. The role of the US as a facilitating actor in the alliance relationship between Turkey and Israel is also mentioned in the study. The US has an official alliance relationship with Turkey through NATO. Israel, on the other hand, is the ally of the US in the region. The US has utilized these connections with both states. The US has intervened in both countries in line with its own interests. In this way, it wanted to ensure that Turkey and Israel act jointly to protect US interests in the region. Therefore, the US had an encouraging effect on Turkey and Israel to form a strategic alliance. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the elements that prove the alliance relationship between Turkey and Israel. According to the Realist Theory, there are two types of alliance relations between states. The first one is the 'Formal (Official) Alliance' relationship, which is clearly written down and formalized with the signed approvals of the parties. The second type of alliance relationship is the 'Informal Alliance', which, although not formally documented, is based on verbal commitments between states, sometimes open to the public and sometimes closed. Since the first type of alliance relationship is explicit, it is the second type of alliance relationship that the thesis focuses on or wants to take one step further. The importance of this thesis can be explained by the reason for choosing the second type of alliance relationship. This is because such alliances are more in need of scrutiny and proof. In addition, informal alliances constitute a more challenging aspect of diplomacy. These forms of alliances may cause difficulties in finding an official basis in international law when necessary. For this reason, it is more imperative that they are thoroughly researched and understood. Thus, in the event of a possible conflict or dispute, if the mutual steps taken, concessions or concessions made are well known and revealed, they can guide the foreign policies and decision-making processes of states even if the alliance relationship ends.
