Alteration of chair design in the context of material and production technologies from 20th century to the present

Furniture, which meets the physical and social needs of people, has evolved over time in parallel with materials and production technologies. Chair designs, which have been evolving in line with changing needs and measures within the social life conditions of societies in the historical process, continued to develop in close relationship with the thought of the designer and the materials and production technologies. Chairs, as a seating furniture, are produced as designs where innovative design and production technologies are used, in which the artificial intelligence is also involved in the design process in the adventure of searching for the new. In this design method, which is called "generative design" in which artificial intelligence participates in the design process, the contributions of materials and production technologies are a matter of curiosity. In this study, the scope and objectives of the study are explained in the introduction section; in the second chapter, the concept of furniture and furniture design is mentioned and chair designs as a seating furniture are discussed in the historical process. In the third chapter, the effects of the developments experienced in the scope of the study in the years 1900 and afterwards have been examined over four different topics in line with the sociocultural, war-technology relationship, developments in the material and production technologies. In the fourth chapter, the method of the study explained. A.I. chair (2019, Philippe Stark & Autodesk) which was designed by collaboration of human and artificial intelligence for the first time using Autodesk Fusion 360 program, the contribution of materials and production technologies to the point reached in the design today has been examined; and the findings obtained from this study are explained with tables. In the conclusion section, the contribution of materials and production technologies to design has been mentioned at the point reached and predictions about the future of furniture design have been made.
